As some may have already seen on here myself & My father have started a 33 roadster build. Well we have finished getting distractd by the T coupe and both the Harleys and decided it was time to actually start working on the bloody thing. I'll include a concept drawing a mate here in Perth did for us. The only change is it will have a one piece bonnet top with open sides and the engine is now still a blown flatty but we had to build another one cos the firt one ended up in the T. We will be using a ported and relived 59A block adjustable lifters, Joe Hunt magneto, Navaro heads, Wade supercharger mated to original cast manifold fed by a pair of Demon 98 carbs. This will be mated to a 5 speed toyota box to give it longer legs. So here we Go...... Now we started this about 12 months ago and I had been posting these in the Ol farts page but someone suggested putting it on the main board so here we go. The concept shanges a bit throughout the build and I know some won't like certain bits but its my Ol mans car and its what he Wants......
Started today knocking up a body jig so we can work on both the body and the chassis at the same time. Mocked up the flatty to check that the blower is going to allow the water jackets to come out of the heads. Ported polished and relived 59A block, adjustable lifters, stock internals, Joe hunt maggy, Wade blower, & 2 x Demon 98 carbs.
Sat the blower and carbs on dummy block in chassis we are gunna use to check height. Should be sticking through the bonnet just nicely Body on Jiggy Jig...
Found a picture of dad's original car as he had just liscenced it in about 1967 / 1968 here in Australia.
Started with a bit more today made a wooden buck and hammered out a fill in piece for around the top of the body where the soft top usually attaches.
Started putting some more bits into the ol girl today. Mounting the moter and gearbox trying to work out where to run the pipes, and setting up the 4 bars ect...
Dads been doin all the fiddly stuff this week. We mounted the booster and pedals made a clutch linkage, taked the exhausts together to see where we are gunna run em. Tail shaft loop taked together and waiting for a pressing to come back to finish the tranny mount.
Got the Roadster at home for chrissy as when the boss gets out of hospital me and the ol man are gunna need somewhere to hide out. Mocked up the body and doors on it today in the shed. Have to lengthen the body to suit the New doors but so far looking about right. Need to get it all together to work out how much channel. I rekon Heaps but the ol man thinks maybe leave about an inch of rail showing under neath.
Ok so over the chrissy period we got a bit excited and did some work onit... Put 10mm laser cut plates in rear quarters to mount up the doors and hold the rear shape. Drilled and countersunk the hinges to suit.. Nice new front end Plenty of steel in the back half... Steel in the cowl too.... The boss seems happy with it so far..... What would he know anyway...It aint the sixties anymore Nice new R/H half rack from unisteer... Body off again and time to finish chassis... New bootlid and beaver panel all the bits are finally here. THanks to Rare32 at Armadale Auto parts.. Couple of arty shots..
Put the new fron't end in the chassis on the weekend, sorted out the exhausts and a few mates dropped round and give me a hand to put the body back on. rolled it out into the sunshine for a better look. I'm really happy with the way it sits and the channel looks jus right. More to the point me Old man is happy .....it is his car!
Started tidying up arond the back end. GUnna work my way around her and keep it moving along now (hopefully) We want to try and finish by the end of August this year. Welded a bit out and started to clean her up. GUnna need a bit of lead when we come to it. We are gunna run it in bear metal with a clearcoat. Not perfect just neat.
Body at a mate's place getting the rest of the bits sorted. Craig is a wizard with metal sorted out the door jamb and cgeck the swaged panel behind the channel.
lead wiping and assembly last weekend still heaps to go though... Body is goin to be clear coat over bare metal when we are finished.
Edit Report 08-05-2011 10:03 PM benflathead My favorite shot home at dad's house not finished but home where it should be.......the look on dads face with it sitting in his shed is worth all the work so far.
Cars in bits again. I have the body at home for the rest of the welding and lead wiping and Pete has the chassis at his plase for brakes wiring ect.... Looking back... Start Come a bit of a way...
Well dad and Drew (the trimmer in our club) got together and chose the leather for the ol Girl. Bloody lovely and feels like sitting in a comfy old well worn couch.... Damn its nice...... Started to fab the dash as well...... Now being a boily I can comfortably say I am well out of my depth fugen wood. Cant weld it, cant grind it, cant work with it...... the dash is gunna be VERY simple... Timber covered in the same leather as the seat with tuck and roll. Landrover series 2 ignition with light switch incorporated. Old english ford speedo, 2 x moon guages one with oil and water one with volts and fuel and english indicator switch. Not that happy with the dash gunna start again tomorrow and add some curve either side of the centre its too straight
Now wasn't quite sold on the dash SO i started again. Needed a bit of curve to match the sexy lines of the 33...... MUCH MORE BETTERER...
Well I changed the dash shape a bit more and sent it off to get trimmed. I put MK#1 back in and proceeded to make kick panels and a nice tuck and roll piece for the fire wall....
Now I know a few of ya were a touch worried about the old wooden dash. Dad picked it up this morning from our mate Drew the trimmer and damn it looks old. Just perfect for what we wanted simple yet elegant (Unlike Oggie he's just simple).....
That is where we are up to not bad for just under 12 months if I do say so myself. Bit of a way to ge still but getting there I just want to get it finished for me ol Man Pete to enjoy. Now let the fun begin.......
