Well I bought this 60 a couple weeks ago, and started working on it yesterday. I bought this car for the wife, shes been wanting a 59 or 60 Chevy for years. So I found this one, and based on the description went ahead and bought it. So yesterday I started tearing into it pulling out the interior. Today I set about to pull up the floor repair. Typical bad repair job, sheet metal tacked to the rusty shit underneathe. Of course all the cross bracing for the floors is rotted and so are the inner and lower rockers. The inners I know I can get but its the lowers and outers for that matter Im not sure about. Im no tinbender, but this might be the project I have to learn on.
This place has some braces for you. http://www.carsinc.com/chevy/1958-1960-chevy/impala-58-60/1959/sheetmetal/
Also, here. http://www.carsincimpala.com/chevy-impala/13/1959/1959-Chevy-Impala/58/Sheetmetal/3/show-all-sc/
Thanks Mark, yeah I was looking at their parts list. I might as well check off every brace and panel they carry for this car. I was inquireing in another thread yesterday about their quality but got no answers. Hmmm I didnt see the rockers the other night looking at their site. I figured they had to be available.
Considering that you are replacing the entire floor and not just trying to replace a panel, I would guess that their complete setup should match pretty well with itself. They few times I've had problems it trying to get a repo panel to match a stock one.
Cars Inc has good quality, but I don't know if it's made in the usa. They are a couple of miles from me and I've bought stuff for my chevy. I have not bought any brackets but I have checked them out and they are decent. Impala Bob's and Harmons may also have brackets. I've bought stuff from Bob's my only issue was it shipped slow.
Troy I bought a new sand blaster a few weeks ago. If you need to use it that's cool. Just grab some sand and come on. I won't be much help to you for the first couple of weeks since I got my knee cut on today. Keith If you need to use my Hobart Mig you are also welcome to it.
Thanks guys. Looks like Impala Bobs has one stop shopping. Looks like another 15000 I can whip this thing into a 5000 car.
Thanks Keith. Yeah Its gonna need to be blasted. Its definaltely lookin like I need to invest in a rotisseri too. Man I didnt want to go this deep into this car. Thats why I sold the other one I had. Thought I was getting a better car this time to start with.
Troy, how is the mechanical end of the car? You said you were wanting to change colors and if it is off of the frame that should make life easier. As long as there is light at the end of the tunnel and It makes your wife happy it will bw worth it.
The engine runs with some prompting, Im not even gonna mess with it and tune it in right now. Since its getting pulled now anyway. The tranny puked all its fluid all over my garage floor, dont know whats going on there or realy care at this point. And since now Im into a full rebuild of the car, all the new stuff the car is supposed to have mechanicly is pretty much mute. The rear frame rails need to be replaced from the kickup on back, thats just what Ive seen so far. Ill get it whipped into shape itll just take time and alot of $$. The wife will have a nice ride when its done. No way would I cut her loose in this thing even if it did run. Im done being bitchy now. Going to get my new front tires mounted on the 40.
So, It looks as if you are building a car out of nothing. Building a car out of some floor repair panels.
I feel your pain. I have a 60 wagon with previous repairs. Looks great until you crawl under it. Floor pans were just laid into place and welded over gaping holes underneath, lots of trimming needed. Outer rockers replaced while the inners are almost non existant. Haven't found inners available yet. Itll be a nice learning experince at least.
Eckler's Late Great Chevys is serious one stop shopping. They were the only ones that had my repro 6 cylinder plug wires. Good luck with all that sheet metal repair. I took the lazy way out and bought a rust free California '59. As my Dad always says: It only costs a little more to go first class.
This is the other car...the 3rd one in fact trying to get a suitable builder. Im mostly pissed at myself for not going and looking at it in person. Will never do that again. Rustynewyorker it was close it came from OH.
There's a 60 Chevy sitting on a trailer in Branson West , Mo along side of Hiway 13 . Don't know if it's for sale or not . Might be a better builder or a parts donor .
This is the add that I answered Location: N.E. Ohio Price: 5000 I hate to sell this car for such a cheap price, but I found a '37 Chevy I just have to have! My loss, your gain!! I was asking $7500, but I need $5K ASAP!! At this point, i'm not interested in trades, Cash only. First person with $5000 gets it!! 1960 Bel - Air 2 door Body is pretty good, a couple small rust spots, Small ding or two, nothing major. Nice doors & fenders, floor repairs have already been done, trunk floor is super solid! Interior is usable, but not perfect. Mid 80's GM bucket seats, stock rear seat, home made door pannels, nice dash. SBC -0- miles on a top end rebuild 350 TH tranny New Holly 600 New cam, rockers, lifters, ect. New chrome reverse wheels, which look awsome on this car! New cherry bombs & pipes. new brakes (entire braking system). new auto meter gauges Clear Ohio title in hand. The Bel Air is not perfect, but it's not priced like a show car either. I consider this car to be a bargain for only $5000!! The best way to reach me is by phone, i'm not on the computer that offten. If you want this car, don't be lazy and send a PM, pick up the phone and give me a call. Please note: if the '37 Chevy I'm after sells to someone else before the Bel - Air is sold, the price of the Bel - Air goes up! SO ACT FAST!! Attached Thumbnails
Cars Inc advertises themselves as selling mainly USA fabbed stuff. The sheetmetal and interior stuff of theirs that I have seen has been better than the competition. I plan on buying a shitload of stuff from them in the next month or so. I also know they will give you a 10% discount pretty easily.
Cant get the pics from the add this was as of last night. I started to test strip the paint. I definately didnt buy it because of the color.
So......you bought this car from a Hamb member? I like the part where he said..."floor repairs have already been done" Maybe keep all the good stuff and look for a western shell.
Troy, You bought that car down in Bedrock from Fred didn't ya? Seriously, none of those panels are hard to replicate a few beers and some time on the pullmax might save ya some bucks. pool.
You lucky bastard, being able to spend time working on an old car and being able to blame your wife!!
Troy It doesn't look that bad.... Send me the trans and I'll rebuild it for you. What year frames interchanged? 58-64? Might just know where a good one is....
Hey Troy, There is a guy in Jeff City that deals in just 59-60 Chevys. When I was over at his place there was at least 7-8 cars lined up that I could see. He might have some of the parts you need. P. M. me and I'll give you his e-mail and see if I can still find his phone number.
