Project Fairlane

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ottoparts, May 5, 2009.

  1. So I haven't been on much due to playing with my Fairlane. I picked up a Magneto for my 289. Its a little tall and wont fit unless I plan on turning my carbs sideways.
Got a free parts car with a good frame rail/horn. I cut if off today. I ordered my ladder bars and cross member from Summit this week too.
Nothing special, just saying hi and showing my goodies.

How cool would that wagon be if it was a 2 door. hhmmmmmm Maybe take two hardtop doors and, well you know. Luv the 6t5

  4. Got my ladder bars and cross member today. I then in turn added my first go fast part to my wagon.... the stickers in the back windows. Oh yea, I'm cool now.

  5. So the following pics show why I needed the right side front sub-frame rail/horn. I also cleaned up the interior. The light gray material is the new floor pan sitting on what was the factory floor pan.

  6. Still working on my rust repair. Looks as if Wednesday is when I will actually cut the frame rail. Pics are of the car and my progress in steps. The last pic is the good frame rail. This is the first frame repair I ever done. Do I seem to be going in the right direction? Comments?

  7. Well, she is cut. I removed the rusty frame rail/horn. Now you can see how bad the rail really was. I then put rust mort on the replacement frame rail/horn. That is why it is a funny color.

the battery realy kills the frame on the early f lanes. I had a 64 hi po car,and it had the same problem. keep up the work. use the mag for trading material, a good ignition is very easy to hook up.

Looking good ottoparts! I still have to repair my p***enger's side front frame rail on my 1962 Ford Fairlane, but have a good frame rail from California. I don't think I'll have to cut it out, but rather drill out the spot welds.

    Thanks!

  12. Holy rust batman!!!! Looks like a michigan car lol! You are on the right track though. Keep up the good work. I've always had a soft spot for fairlanes AND wagons.

  13. Thanks all. If all goes to plan, I should have the replacement rail in place by weekends end.

Cool car. One of my buddies from high school had a red and white 2 door hardtop and a powder blue 2 door post. We put v8s autos in both of them. Have'nt seen one in years.

  15. A little more work done tonight. I cut the new rail section to size. I then poked holes through both the frame horn and frame rail on the car. I plan on welding in some plates on the inside of the frame. More support and will give me something to weld to when I weld the frame horn on. The last pic is the frame horn just sitting there to see how far off my cuts are.

Nice progress so far, I wish I had your ambition! I'm hoping to work on my floorboards this weekend (stripping them down, there's five minor holes that will have to be repaired). Then I'll have to concentrate on my frame rail repair.

    Keep up the good work!

  18. As for running the magneto, I'm thinking about turning my carbs sideways. I have attached a pic of my 289.
As for the rust repair, this is my learning curve. I have a 1950 F2 and 1949 F2 for parts. This truck is going to be my sons and I's project. It has plenty of rust repair needed.

  19. Sorry, forgot to add the pics.

  20. Well I made my inner piece for the frame rail. I then mocked it up. A buddy wanted to join the fun so I let him start the welding.

  21. I'm a little behind on posting. Forgot the camera a few times. The frame rail/horn is all welded on as well is the inner fender and core support. Next I plan on tackling the driver side floor board. Notice that Ford did not paint under the cross brace I took off.

I had some disc brakes laying around from a Maverick. Wouldn't you know, the spindles are the same in measurements and ball joint size. I took a pic with the drums on, then with the disc mocked up.

I went to a local wrecking yard and picked up two proportioning valves. One is off an 1970 Ranchero and the other is off a 1972...... I forgot what. It was a big full size car.

I also removed the ram ***ist.

  24. Life happens and the Fairlane had to sit for awhile. But now I have a chance to get back on her.
    Fresh pics.
I have a whole bunch of parts to throw at her.
    Solid motor mounts,
    Long tube headers
All new brake hardware, including a line lock
135 gph fuel pump and filter set up
wheels and tires. Picked up a set so Cragar Street Stars
Hood scoop should be here tomorrow.
Other misc. little parts as well

  25. Hood scoop showed up today.
I threw it on for a quick idea of how it would look.
    I like it.
    Its square, like the car.

  26. Removed the front coils today. Shot one across the front yard and caught the other with my crotch (long story).
I threw the fenders on to get these lowered pics.
I like it, but way to low for my hedders.

I was really wanting one of those 600ci Ford short block kits a few years back for a street car. The only problem I had was what to put it in. Then I saw a shot of a 65 2 door sitting like this. I says to myself, I says, “Now THAT needs a 600 incher.”

Cool ride there guy. I do like them 65s.

On the header problem. If you really like the look, sell what you got and get some shorties.

Lose the scoop too. A nice flat hood don't need no warts.
