Me too. I have the sets of reprints of Project that PHR sold, and often wonder about the Pontiac powered Deuce.
Yeah I can’t believe I missed this thread. I had a yellow 57 Chevy like that for the first few HAMB Drags. it had just received that yellow paint job when I bought it so I just went with it Public opinion was about 50-50. They either loved it or hated it. I subscribed to Popular Hotrodding magazine for about 10 years starting in 1976. You bet project X was influential for me. my favorite version was the Hollywood Knights movie.
Sold the rev limiter chips from the MSD box on E-Bay. Total down to $3364.90. Transformed my battery to look like a DieHard . I used some black ABS and trimmed it to fit. Then took my hot knife and melted a margin around the perimeter. Cut some holes and glued on some caps I had laying around. Had some stickers made. I'm****uming they had a battery hold down at some point so I put one on mine. This stuff may not be perfect but until somebody builds a better Project X clone it'll do. Still not settled on an air filter.
My upholstery guy just dropped off the Tonneau cover. Man, it finishes off the interior nicely! I think the cars about done. There are just a few little bugs left to sort out. There's a heavy clunk in the front suspension intermittently. I've determined it's a lower ball joint. The shocks on the car are valved to push in easy and pull out hard. The shocks I took off were 90/10s, and they pull apart easily and push in hard, allowing the front to rise on acceleration. The new shocks slow the return of the lower control arm, and the sloppy ball joint clunks when it drops into a dip or hole in the road. I'm sure it never did it before with the other shocks. Anyway, I have new ball joints on the way. Gearing up for Wendover this Saturday night at the Nugget car show. People are there from all over the world. It will be interesting to see the reception it gets.
Rex, i have always enjoyed seeing your builds, no matter what they are! Frankenstein Corvettes (Big Block 283 lol), Yenko Camaro, Buick GSX, Gassers! All bad**** cars! Project X is a beautiful recreation! congrats! hope to see you this weekend.
This car is a piece of art, and that^ version of Project X will NEVER go out of style. Great work Rex, your car is fantastic and dead-on accurate for the period you were shooting for. This thread makes me want a 57 210 post!!
As mentioned above, We took the 57 to Wendover for the car show at the Nugget for the opening weekend of Speed Week. It was fairly easy to pick out of the crowd as you can see from the overhead shots. Can you spot it? It received quite a bit of attention from that group. Even ran into a few fellow Hambers there that have followed this build thread. I thought that was cool. Folks from all over the world in attendance. The only down side to the deal was the Nugget provided a DJ to play music for the show, and while it was good tunes, they were set up right across from us and it was a bit too loud for easy conversation. Small price to pay for a good show. The only celebrity I recognized was Keith Turk. He's a friend of David Frieburger and was partners with him on his land speed Camaro. I got his autograph, not that he's a star or anything, but why not? He did like the Chevy also, which was nice.
For that being a car show what a sea of drab! You looked like the only bright spot there. Such a sad state everything is either flat black or rusty.
A new landmark has been passed. Sold the bare steel fenderwell headers on E-Bay for $201.39, finally bringing the purchase price under 3 grand to $2877.51. WOW! The E-Bay fee's are eating me alive. I would likely be at zero if I got to keep all the money for the parts I've sold. Also, an update on the front brake pads I talked about a page ago. They are significantly better gripping than the other ones. I might look into a smaller master cylinder this winter, but the brakes are pretty good now.
Most excellent!!! I loved reading Project X in PHR, read and reread your thread. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Not sure if I’m more impressed with the build or the cost, WOW. I’d triple your money in a heartbeat. LOL Dan
You have done amazing things with this And for Little $$. I have Always loved Project X having grown up with a '57 Chevy Sport Coupe. Pop had it 7 yrs before trading it in. Almost got it back several yrs. later, but it wasn't meant to be. Thanks for taking us along!!
From an old Hot Bike article. SuperTrapp Industries, founded in 1971 by Paul Moller in Davis, California, has a rich history in the performance exhaust industry. The company's journey began with the creation of the XDUSOR muffler, which was the first motorcycle exhaust product sold by Moller. This product was a result of Moller's experimental work with tunable disc technology, which allowed for the customization of exhaust systems for motorcycles, ATVs, and automobiles. Over the years, SuperTrapp expanded its product line, introducing various exhaust systems and components that cater to a wide range of motor vehicle applications.
supertrapps were developed for dirt bikes but eventually found their way onto cars i think in the 80s and 90s.
We went to a cruise night on Tuesday at a place called "The Garage Grill". It's an automotive-themed restaurant. Dave Kindig showed up in one of his C1 Corvettes. It's pretty unusual to see him at a local show. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen him at one before. He does live pretty close to this one. Perhaps it's a big hassle. As a side note, I have sold him some parts in the past, visited his shop a few times, and know him a "little bit," He might even know me by my name (probably not). But he would say, "You're that guy up in Bountiful I bought parts from." He's the nicest guy you could hope to meet as far as I've experienced. He seems to genuinely like people. I don't know of a kid that has visited his shop who didn't get an autographed Hot Wheels car from him personally. I've never seen anything to suggest that he's putting on an act. Anyway, something a little bit different on a Tuesday night.
