Projekt Cheap and Free Gasser

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Norrland, Apr 2, 2008.

  1. Me and 2 friends have been sittin around and thinking and talking about building a Gasser of some sort. Been checking out cars to build on and what parts we have laying around. This ting is build on NO budget what so ever so we are talking about 750 Dollars tops from our pockets.

    Anyway!

We tought that this very RARE Ford Escort from 1957 would be a great start (what do u think?). The best part is that it was located about 1,5 miles from my friends house. We got 2 cars (the wagon and a Sedan) and a lot of parts for 400 Dollars and we could sell the other cars and part s for that kind of money!

Here is some pics from the picking up tis last Sunday afternoon.

    The Sedan!

That little sedan needs a chop. It could be a mini shoebox ford!
    Neat idea.

That little sedan is butt ugly... and I absolutely love it! Chop it and use it as a cruiser!

  8. Uppdates will come as soon as somethings being done with it! The frontend from an older Anglia and the rear tires are free. We have a old Dodge van that will have to let go of th 318 and we also have a 3 speed from a Old Chevy that we will make an adapter to so it will fit the Mopar

  9. We had plans to sell it but who knows, it may be customized after we are finished with the Wagon!!

  11. We had a wagon just about like that one here, except it had a mesh grille. Still have pieces of it - it was rotted so bad it fell apart when my friend went to move it, so the body got junked. Came with the camp he bought 4 or 5 years ago.

    Great project!
What's wrong with the trans that came with the 318? That might be a better way to go that a 3-speed Chevy.
And if you can get the rear end out of the van, that'd be great too: Especially if it's a drop-out center section 8 3/4 rear end. The stock axles aren't tapered, so they can be shortened and resplined by a good machine shop.

AND, depending on the year of the van, early '60s A-100 van seats are what Mopar installed in their factory Super Stock drag cars. Reproduction seat covers and new foams are available for them them (though probably more money than you'll want to spend!)

I'm with everyone else here--keep us posted!

  15. The transmisson in the Van is so long, We talking about 130 cm = 51,18 Inches totaly for engine and trans!! There will be a TO short driveshaft if we could get one there!!

Nice !! reminds me so much of a friends thames 1/4 panel many years back. First built with a 283 with 2- 4's that I built,, mounted where the driver would usually sit. (driver sat at the very back, just inside the bear "barn doors". It was strictly drag strip at that time. Later the engine was put back up front with a straight axle and an automatic and it was street driven and showed. I only wish I had a few pics of what was known here locally as "The Dog Catcher" to show.

how much do those cars weight? i know the older Fiats are like a little under 1200... and that dont look much bigger...

  24. My pal sold the Dodge van today so we instead could buy a Chevy van and maybe also a couple of solid wheels that fits the rear tires.

A couple of cellphone pics from today

Great imagination! The wagon in the photoshop is very right on.

  28. You get a complete and running 80's chevy van for around 6-700 Dollars. Biggest problems with those vans overhere is that they RUST like hell. You could almost hear them rust when its quiet outside!!! :)
