I have a 40,000 btu forced air propane heater from walmart. It was $98 and works pretty good in a 30x30 shop
I have a 35-80000BTU propane heater for my garage, its 20x24 and I can heat it up enough to work in the garage even in -20(c) weather. A 20lb tank will last most of the weekend if you do not keep it cranked full blast. I notice the fumes depend on two things: where you get the tank filled(some stations seem to use bad or smelly propane), and what you are spraying in the garage. If you use wd40 or brake cleaner the fumes tend to mix and can give you a rather good migraine the next day. I end up cracking the garage door about once an hour to get some fresh air in. Seems to help. Here is the one I have: http://www.mrheater.com/productdetails_extended.asp?catid=45&id=25
has anyone thought of using a catalytic converter to clean up the fumes? I remember seeing one heated up with a propane torch and then fed some propane to keep it burning. just a crazy idea but might work for someone who thinks outside of the box. Has anyone used the quartz heaters?
when i was in upper mich, my garage was 12 x24 and insulated. I used a heater out of a trailer, and it worked well, propane. Now that I am down south ,i use a 40,000 btu propane with a blower, and it does well. I have a 100 lb bottle.
I use a 90% eff house furnace, vents thru pvc, gets air for combustion from outside and has sealed burners.Safe, quiet, efficient, and low maint.
this is what i want to do in the future..eventually i will score a decent 90% unit and **** can the ol' log burner..but until than...i will suffer for my heat
Craigslist for used furnaces, if youre in a cold climate its worth it. Im currently using a salamander, its a new one that I take apart and clean regularly, I fire it up with the door cracked blowing out until its up to temp, once at operating temperature the fumes are reduced, I still only run it long enough to take the chill down. dont use if youre prepping for paint, the oil residue in the air can screw you up pretty quickly as it settles on everything. I used to buy the heat bulbs and run those, they do help above a work bench
