I'll second the HawtDog heater....best investment I made in the garage. It was about 10 degrees today and it had it up to about 60 in less than 20 minutes. Cost about $400 and worth every penny.

If ya got a natural gas line there close, why not just watch the papers for an ol furnace someone took out of their house. For sale here all the time for 50-75 bucks, and alot of furnace repair places will give em to ya so they don't have to pay to haul em off. hook up a makeshift vent and you are set to go. I have put 2 furnaces in my rental houses for under 100 each, just a thought. Unhook it in the summer if room is that much of a concern. Just my idea fur ya....To

Buy a "ventless" natural gas heater you already have the line that's the hard part. I got one at Menard's
(like Lowe's, Home Depot etc.) not too expensive and heats great. I use it all winter to keep the chill off the drivers. I don't work out there much cuz I don't have enough room (who does?) But when I do it get's plenty warm. Some building codes don't allow them(don't ask 'em) for attached garages because they are "ventless". I have carbon monoxide sensors in my house and have registered zero CO(?) My garage is pretty tight, but air does get in around the big door, and probably elswhere too. Plus, we open the overhead at least twice a day, and the walk-in, so we get enough exchange. They are nice and pretty inexpensive too.

a friend of mine has a nat. gas hookup run to his back porch for use on his propane BBQ grill, granted that isn't a jet engine heater, but i guess there are some things that do transfer over gas wise.

living in michigan my garage gets cold as hell...there are a few things that i've done and a few things i plan on still doing to make the garage a little warmer.

i have a kerosene heater(the birdcage convection style) it kicks off a ton of heat but as everyone knows, heat rises and my feet stay cold. the solution to this that i found was putting an old oscilating fan up in the rafters (i don't have a nice drywalled ceiling in my garage yet) i pointed the fan downwards and it really aids in the circulation of heat.
i have also found that the large halogen work lights give off a nice amount of heat..and they'll also help warm whatever it is your working on.

one of my next investments is going to be some rubber or foam mats for the floor....they sell some at walmart which look like big puzzle pieces, they come in 2x2 foot packs of 4 (so a 4x4foot section total) for about $8 . i figure even if they're just used underfoot in the area i'm working it'll provide a decent amount of barrier between my feet and the cold concrete.

one thing i've wondered is if anyone's ever tried the heatlamp bulbs that are normally used in bathrooms for added warmth in the garage...i don't know how effective that they would be(or efficient) but i guess it couldn't hurt to try.

good luck with your cold problems.

Instead of spending money on floor mats try putting down an old rug. They are free and big and fire resistant. You need to change it when it gets full of oil,but they last 2-3 years and then you throw it out.My feet are toasty warm.

  8. There was a guy not too far from my bar who tried to hook up his propane heater to his gas line last year. If I think of it, I'll drive by and take a photo of the crater.

Seriously, his house (and garage, and 1/2 the neighbours houses on either side) just*****in' vapourized. Yes, he was in it at the time, no, he couldn't have an open casket.

We got 3 inches of snow today. Might have to start wearing a coat soon. [IMG]
