There's various formulas out there. One I've seen that comes closest to the CID X max RPM Div by 3456= CFM & that's easy to use is CID X 2 X .8= CFM(assuming a typical max RPM for the typical street engine is around 5500).

  2. Sorry i should have explained. That one is called Dons law. I invented it because i realized at about the 25 year mark of my career after sitting down and working it all out with the 1728 cubic inches and rpm /2 that after all that wiggling it always came out to 2 times cubic inches . When doing a race car we went to the next highest unless it was right close . When doing a street engine we went to the next lowest unless it was real close. Same carb choice always no matter which method used. Just less math. It is all on my tech page on my website anyway. I would call it more a rule of thumb then a formula but since both will get you the same carb it works just fine. There is lots of stuff like that.
Like all v8 engines with a four inch bore the cubes is always Stroke X 100 +2 (also one of mine. )
    Ie 302 ford 3 inch stoke time 100 for 300 plus 2 = 302
    350 chev. 3.48 stroke times 100 + 2 =350 cubes
    360 Dodge 3.58 stroke times 100 +2 = 360 cubes.
Not good maybe but sure is practical. Great stuff for bench racing and parties.
    Sometimes math is actually fun.
