What are the feelings of Hambers on the subject of making a car right hand drive? It is a throw together of parts and everything has been custom. It was originally a 1930 4 door leatherback, but all I got was rear doors and front and rear cowl. I custom built a chassis for it, hung a 350/350,traditional front suspension and a triangulated 4 link rear. I am putting the car together to sell and just wanted an idea of how the right hand drive would go over.

    Thanks

....and I would like an explanation on what you think, not just some one liner telling me I am an IDIOT.

I believe it would be a hard sell, unless it's going to Australia or the UK.

  3. my personal opinion; unless it's a british sports car or land rover i wouldn't want it. unless i delivered newspapers.

do you really think that would make it worth more?

  5. There are no pros that I know of.

    Here is a con:

When you drive a lhd in a rhd country or a rhd in a lhd country, the driver can't see shit when they want to pass the car/truck in front of them.

I dont know about worth more but my Popular (Anglia ) is still right hand drive . Took a little getting used to but now its fine . Freaks people out at stoplites ,and a couple of buds that have ridden in say its weird being on the normal drivers side just ridding. Dont think I would build one on purpose with right hand drive but have no intentions of changing mine any time soon.

Something else to think about... If it doesn't sell, are you going to be happy stuck with a right hand drive car?

Help me to understand why you think there would be a benefit to building a right hand drive hot rod out of an old American car that came with left hand drive that you plan to keep in a country like the United States where left hand drive is the norm.

    Thanks.

  10. America was right hand drive, untill Henry Ford produced the first left hand drive car in 1908.
Down here in New Zealand, we are right hook, as is Australia and England, and we like left hook American cars for the novelty.
I cant see any real advantage for you, other than novelty, and dont think this would make the car sell any quicker.

That is the answer. Don't do it. Unless... you are going to never get it registered and only road race it - as most road tracks have a majority of right hand turns and it would be an advantage there. Gary

many years ago, I owned a 1947 MG TC with RH steering. I was pretty sure it was the sportiest thing on four wheels. I realized the major detriment in attempting to pass, you had to pull WAY out to see around the vehicle, and by then you were half-commited with an engine with less than 55hp. That made BOTH sides of a truck in front of you the "SUICIDE".

If you're doing it for the novelty, fine and dandy, if - as you state - you're planning on selling the car, do yourself a favor, don't scale down the spectrum of potential purchasers by creating a white elephant. Some will shy away because of the driving difficulties, and some will resist buying a car with a steering that a stranger created from who knows what.

It all boils down to: KISS

Also +1 on the not being able to overtake! My uncle has a left hook '65 galaxie and can't overtake shit. Also might have something to do with the tired 351...

My personal opinion on this issue is that it should be illegal to drive these right hand drive cars on the streets and hiways in Canada and the US.

As far as I'm concerned they are downright dangerous to other users of the roads.

Should be illegal to licence, drive or import them.

Pro: You too can remember the movie; Corvette Summer, and how cool that little vette was zipping around running from the bad guys.

    Con: not really practical.

  25. Wow, way over the top.

Here in NZ we are RHD and have been importing LHD cars for 100 years.
Not that hard to get used to.
I drove a lhd car for 7 years and never got a scratch on it or inconvenienced any other driver because of it.

My '49 LIncoln I am building is LHD and will stay that way.
I could easily change it to RHD but why?:D

A bit of an extreme view IMO. But, I may be biased because I have been driving licensed, imported RHD cars in the US since I had my learners permit in '77. It's not the car, it's the driver.

To the original poster, I wouldn't do it unless it came that way. I think it would, as many have said, limit the resale value.

I found one pro. You won't look quite as crazy as the guy who built the thing with green wheels that people are talking about in the thread HERE.

I built my 35 Chevy phaeton LHD to be different and I drive in a RHD country. Rare steel car and 1 of only 647 produced. Once you drive around the block a few times it's OK. Overtaking can be a PITA with peep mirror and roof up, OK with roof down. I've driven it consistently now for the past 5yrs without issue. My 46 Olds sedanatte is staying LHD.

Down here, any car over 30yrs old can now be left LHD. If we wanted to drive a muscle car previously we had to convert it to RHD. Any car less that 30yrs old MUST be RHD. I didn't want to convert my 66 GTA Fairlane to RHD but as I wanted to drive it and it wasn't 30yrs old it had to be done.
Damn expensive to convert a modern car to RHD. Early cars are a lot easier. Only advantage I see is being unique.
