Wow. Good thing I asked. I had just sprayed the cross member with a little WD 40 and thought I'd batter make sure that wasn't stupid. Thanks to all. Sounds like I have a couple of better options now!
Stay away from any petroleum based products, and primer is porous, so eventually it would still rust but not as bad as it would with just bare metal, sorry but I dont have a good answer for you, I often wonder the same thing.
