Great car, go thru it get it safe and drive it - Id even keep the funky interior as long as it didnt smell too funky, could refoam the seats, check for critters.

wow. love it. It's real similar to how I found my '40. it was hot rodded in '58 with a '46 59ab, drop axle and some other stuff....then had a barn fall on it.

Nice 39-that's the first car I remember riding in. My grandmother had a black Deluxe 2 door for years.
Fix the wiring. Make it work with 6 or 12V if you need to, but old cloth wire that's been sitting for years can be a great fire starter. That's too nice to risk for something that's really pretty easy.

Does it have '40 headlight bezels? If so the '39 Deluxe are much prettier IMO. Anyway you've scored one of the most beautiful body styles out there, only trumped by a coupe of the same year. I would do whatever it takes to get it safe and roadworth and drive the wheels off it. I'm betting a through cleaning (inside out,top to bottom) would produce a nice drivable survivor and an enjoyable ride for the forseeable future. I even dig the interior. This would allow you to completely preplan any improvemants/changes you wanted to make.

Nice car! You can switch it to 12 volt and keep the look about the same. There are many threads on how to do this. I redid my 1947 ford wiring because it was a pieced together mess. I still run a generator so it still looks fairly original.

I agree with you 100%- Make it safe and drive it as a survivor. That thing is COOL!

Great car! I fixed up this one for my buddy a couple years back, he gave me keys to it and the garage so i can drive it any time I want and it is by far my favorite car to cruise in, enough so I hope to pick up a 40 standard I've found next week so I have one of my own.

Might look into a stock type (cloth) harness, not to expensive from someone like Mac's. Looks right and will still work if you upgrade to 12 volts later. FWIW we kept our 39 6 volts and it drives us nuts, will be converting it to 12 soon.

It has aftermarket sealed beam conversions, and I plan to replace them with '39 rings and lenses.

I do love the coupes, but with two little ones, this is the close second choice, for me.

You just nailed my plan. Brakes, chassis, wiring, fire the engine, seatbelts, drive the hell out of it!

The interior will stay for the time being. The front seat is all ripped up, so I'll throw a blanket on there, and go.

When I hit the lottery, I'll do some black and white t-n-r, and chrome the garnish moldings!

    I love that '40 DeLuxe!

When I was a kid, my cousin and I talked my dad into buying a '40 DeLuxe Tudor that had been rodded in the Sixties.

It was green metallic lacquer with yellow to orange flames, black vinyl over the stock seats, chrome garnish moldings, and had a sbc hooked to a PG. It also had a big 50'-something Olds rearend and semi-radiused rear fenders. Must've been someones drag car back in the day.

Anyway, my dad street-rodded it late 80's style, and it lost most of its character. Later, it was sold, but I've always had a soft spot for '40 DeLuxes.
