I used the old army canteen but I made it a coolant recovery tank rather than just a puke tank. This way anything that comes out goes right back in.
I used an old Chevy oil filter cannister and coverted it to coolant tank--hard-lined it look like it's still an oil tank.
Pardon me for my stupidity but wouldn't the cans mounted in front of, and totally blocking the radiator cause a bit of a cooling problem???
Moving a post for Flatdog: Here is the catch can that we use in the alter. You can see it is a rare piece, carried by Sgt.York in the big one. Attached Thumbnails Attached Thumbnails Dang...can't move the pics. Anyone?
Sorry, I found a post better suited for my question: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2255608&posted=1#post2255608
That had to cost a fortune when it was new, especially when the Navy is paying fot it. Your tax dollars at work....
I've got a stainless Martini shaker on my Caddy, it's set up as a 'recovery' type tank. It was shiny and just the right size. I'll try and get a pic tomorrow.
If just a puke tank on a good early cooling system, it doesn't need much--system will puke down to the level it prefers on its first use, stay there. Puke tank is just to catch that overflow, which is why it was a drag only thing back when...a minor puddle didn't matter anywhere else. If problems cause continual puking, the puke tank doesn't matter...system is doomed. If it is a modern (1975? or so up) with two-way cap, the coolant puked on heating up flows back into radiator when it cools down...so that fairly small in&out volume is a minimum volume. Most systems have extra capacity and some reserve fluid in there...in these systems, if all fluid disappears from tank, your system has a leak somewhere. Last type, distantly related, is the header tank as in Vettes and some trucks...in these, the tank is the fill point for cooling system and is a pressurized part of the circulating system with the engine and radiator. Not really a puke tank--this system needs ANOTHER tank for that. I think for most early systems, a quart would be more than enough.
Here's a pic of an Air/Oil separator I made for my 32 roadster. Works great, there's a tech article about it floating around here somewhere. Pictured here because I plan to make another one as well as a matching overflow tank for my 31 on 32 rails roadster project. As well as set up a double bracket for the two of them. The bracket will be rounded on the edges, the one in the pic was a prototype of sorts and I didn't want to put too much work into the Air/Oil Separator deal if it didn't cure the problem I was involved with. I have a lathe, but this piece could be made with a drill press and some determination. The 2nd pic shows the neat little 1 qt Moon tank I use for an overflow on the 32. An expensive little devil, but it could be duplicated in a slightly smaller form using common junkyard stuff. I may do a tech article on this a little way down the line. The Separator as shown could be done up in a less 'billety' form than I have here. Polishing the body, rounding the bracket edges and polishing it would perhaps - in the eye of the beholder for sure - make it look a little more old timey. Old timey not a particular worry on the 32, it's a test bed of sorts and I make changes to it now and then just to see what will happen. So far, so good. It's a great little car to drive and I enjoy using it to chase parts and the like. It's not surprising to see it sitting outside the junkyard while I'm wandering around inside....
Here's a "Master" cutting oil can we have on our HAMBster .............. ...... and a brass Behr I have on my toad wagon that goes well with the stock top tank.
Here is my newest one. My old one was a Mobil 2 Stroke motor oil can. Okay,Okay I'm a little confused here. Not to go O/T or anything but apparently Photo Bucket has changed the format a little since last I was there and I don't know which tag to use to upload pics anymore. A little help please!!!!Someone clue me in on which one to use!!!!!! Thanx in advance.
Kountry Kwencher........mmmmm....Wait i'm to young to know about that stuff, i don't even know why i have a strawberry hill bottle.......
stainless 50s martini shaker, pulled it out tonight along with the radiator and pontiac engine. R.I.P
This gives me an idea. I have one of those old finned aluminum oil filter units that used toilet paper inside. It looks really good but to actually use it as an oil filter..... probably not. To convert it to a puke catcher would be a great use for it. Thanks for the idea. pigpen
