Loosen the nut, squirt a little PB blaster on the top of the exposed shaft. (the surfaces of the matched tapers will be just porous enough to utilize the penetrant)

Make sure the nut is 1/8" up from the surface. Now, plant your feet firmly on the floorboard beneath the pedals, one hand at each opposite spoke, and pull up firmly.
Pull a little harder on one at a time, about 80 pounds of pull usually does it.
A friend on the opposite pair of spokes might ***ist, but I always get it with one good pull.

If it's a stubborn one, you mak have to have friend tap on a soft drift (small wood block, 2" X 2" X 6") on top of the loosened nut, flush with the mast shaft end.
    Tap it while applying pressure.

Don't remove the nut while pulling, as the steering wheel will come off and make contact with your face. (or your friend's) You'd be surprised at how many have scars from this very operation!

If what he said doesnt work^^^^

I read somewhere that you take your whole column and box and wheel out of the car. then you sit on a stool on a bench with the steering wheel in your lap and the column hanging down. You then hit the already loosened nut with a hammer.

I use a bearing seperator and a two jaw puller. I put a rag under the wheel to prevent damage.
