Hey guys the bushing for my torque converter is shot allowing the convertor seal to leak. I have the engine out, can I pull the pump out easily to take it to a shop for a new bushing? I've read of some guys doin it this way but other guys saying the trans needs to stand on its ass end so everything stays in place. Thx

It can be done but you have to be extra careful.

You will want to keep the input shaft held in at all time. You could take a measurement across the bell housing to the input shaft before you start to be able to keep track of it. The next thing is the front drum which the band will help hold in but when you are done with the pump you will want to measure across the pump mating surface to where the front thrust washer seats on the drum then check and see if this jives with the pump (from thrust washer to pump mounting face).

Take all the bolts out, there are two holes in the front pump tapped for 3/8 16 I am pretty sure, get a long piece of chain leave it fairly slack and bolt it to the pump.Hold the case and a couple of quick pulls and it should come out.Or you could fabricate a wheel puller with long studs lie a balancer puller.First way works just fine.

I just put a couple bolts in those holes and use a hook bar to pop it loose.

stand trans up , pull pump straight up out of trans. this keeps clutch drum in position. use new gasket and o-ring on pump. cut 2 bolts to make alignment studs when you reinstall the pump. then lay trans over and slide converter back into trans. rotate converter when reinstalling to engage flat spots on converter into pump gear.put straight edge across bellhousing, converter bolt mounting pads should be about 1/2 inch back from straight edge.

Use a slide hammer with the proper adapter in the threaded holes in the pump. Push down on the input shaft to make sure that you don't pull it out when removong the pump. Cut the heads off some 5/16 bolts long ones to use as alignment pins when you install the pump. I have don this many times and it works
