My dad and I are trying to pull the trans out of his 1940 Ford 1/2 ton with a 1949-53 flathead 8ba and the original non sink 3 speed trans behind it. Also has the original banjo rear end in it. We were trying to avoid pulling the motor out, we already have the rear end and driveshaft pulled away. We have all the trans mount bolts out and disconnected the transmission from the first part of the two piece bell housing. We are currently having trouble getting it pulled back and up enough to get it out from inside the cab. It seems like there is only a half inch to an inch holding us back from getting it out. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I don't think you'll have enough room in the rearward direction to get the trans back. You have to get the input shaft out of the bushing, then back to clear the pressure plate. I just had the engine and trans out of my '40 sedan, and based from that, I think pulling the engine is the only way.

I will say the front sheet metal comes off a lot quicker than it looks.

We already have the back of the motor jacked up. We also have the rear trans mount already above the frame rails. Just the biggest issue is getting it to pull back further. There is room for it just the input shaft is not giving us any leeway.

  7. many years ago (about 1971) i pulled the transmission out of my `40 ford sedan by pulling the rear end back and lifting it up and out through the interior. i don't remember raising the motor?

When you mean lift the motor, do you mean pull the motor forward for more clearance? We are really trying to avoid taking the front apart to do a pull.

It WILL come out the way you're trying to do it, from inside the cab. Surely, you have supported the REAR of the engine, taking any "bind" from the input shaft on trans. Try pushing it back in and then out again. It will come! DD

We do have the rear engine supported for that reason. The 3 speed comes out about 2 1/2 inches and no more. We are hung up for some reason.

We have disconnected the clutch linkage, and the top of the trans is off, all oil has been drained as well.
