How is it going to seal to the needle if you drill it out? It will leak and not work.

  3. The needle is tapered, you won’t drill bigger than the needle.
My devilbis gun has 1.3 1.5 1.8 , 2.0 and 2.2 tips. Same needle just a bigger hole.

I got an extra 10 bucks, I’ll prove it tomorrow

Yup, it's true. My Devillbis FLG gun has all of those tips, too.

I have two purple guns that I have retired. I might cull the tips, and drill them out. Just need to see if I have those bits.

I run lacquer thinner through all of mine to make sure that they are clean, before I use them. It has never disturbed the finish.

Do you gents know what size drill bits for a 1.8 and 2.0 would be?

    Appreciate the info!

I rooted around in my Metric stuff and found a 2.0mm and a 2.3mm. Probably close enough.

I will see if I can get a grip on them in the lathe, for accurate drilling.

  10. I have 2, used 1 to jamb my Ford and do the interior garnish and dash, shot acrylic lacquer through it. 1st thing, strip it down and clean it. The o-ring that goes under the bottlewas wonky, chucked that and got one from Ace Hardware.

we use the cheap guns at work to paint the drills we build and or rebuild. throw most of them away afterwards. now when i say drill, it's not a hand held. t4 ir truck drill is what we are rebuilding right now.

@Bandit Billy, is this the one you used on your truck build?

Uh, no. But I could have bought 50 or so of them for what that Iwata cost. The digital regulator would have bought a couple more. My cupboards would look like @Moriarity 's

  14. It's been a while since I was in a HF. Podunk Yelm has apparently got beyond podunk as we got our very own HF store opened a week or so ago. The good is it's no longer a 60 mile + round trip to one (only 30 for me now), the bad is even with 'Grand Opening Specials' their prices have increased by quite a bit.

  17. Just divide the MM by 25.4 to covert to inches ( decimal )

  18. HF offers a larger needle and tip, just need to contact customer service. I got one for my primer gun. Performs great.

Bought one this weekend to experiment with, based on this thread. For $10 it'll be fun to try.

Did a huge pile of freshly sand blasted parts (A-arms/coils/leaf packs/core supports/crossmembers/frame/ect) w/one of these El Cheapo purple guns in both epoxy primer & paint. No problems at all. Go git!

Cutting & buffing is work. Do it in sun & work on yer tan! And the shine is not to be surpassed. Was doing that to single stage DUPONT enamel 30 years ago.

They make a good flamethrower if you fill them with gasoline and hit the vapor with a striker.

I have never had any luck with HVLP paint guns, guess I didn't try hard enough. The Astro gravity feed gun works for me.
If these guns are that cheap and you guys use them you should buy a bunch try them all and keep the one's that work the best.

  26. I use these often for primer, not so much for $1000 per gallon base or $400 clear. Personal choice by me.

I use the cheap ones for primer only.

Saves wear and tear on my good one.

My step-dad was a bodyman/shop owner for many years and I watched him lay paint, both enamel and base/clear, with cheap guns and lay paint better than some of the body men who worked for me with a 500 dollar sata in the late 90's.

He never paid over 25 bucks for one. I asked him about it one time and he told me take a guy that can't paint and put a 500 dollar gun in his hand and he still can't paint. Take a guy with experience and put a 25 dollar gun in his hand and watch what he can do. He summed it up and said experience is worth more than a high dollar tool.

    I agreed he was right.

I tried one once, didn’t like it. I learned to paint on a siphon gun with the cup below my hand, and still prefer that style. Cup on top just seems hard to keep level.

My current gun is a Campbell Hausfield from Walmart. Costs a little more than the HF gun just like it, but I’ve had mine 10 years now. Painted several vehicles with it. May try a HF gun if I can find a siphon feed.

  29. I guess my problem is I never used a good gun. Got my start in the 50s with an old siphon gun my dad had as a time and materials handyman. Fooled around with a gun run by a vacuum cleaner, then when rattle cans came out I was in fat city for years. Bumped into HF in the mid 70s and their first generations of cheap guns were amazing step up from my previous experience. Was very poor so couldn't even think about a DeVilbis or Binks gun. The purple gun has always been a fantastic tool even after I got in the bucks in my career, I see no need to spend more. Save that for more tools!! Purple gives me a great job every time.

They were 14.95 at my local store. Did I miss something. Was that an internet deal?
