I remember the first time I saw this car in person... I havent been quite right since it kinda opened a Pandora's box. I have long thought about doing a car loosely inspired by this same body treatment but milder motor mounted a bit lower kinda streetable but just barely. I dont know if that would be blasphemy I'm just really drawn to the body itself and the really short wheelbase yet it still has good perportions.
R&C Feb 2001: I just realized, I guess I "borrowed" it from VNTG41 here on the Hamb when the issue first came out and never gave it back! haha. sorry.. Theres a cool article on Billetproof too. The hater mail from march and april issues was pretty funny too. Like Ryan said, still controversial after all these years!
Thanks Ollin, With the "Rave" in Las Vegas i forgot to post a picture . And since we're thanking people, Another big thanks to Rick Amado - one great photographer !
That is so crazy... and I love the sound of the engine. I agree with what someone else said, it looks like a COOL hot wheel. -W
i still keep this issue by the shitter and look threw it about once a week this is the car that really got me into ratrods
When I first saw this the PPE in metal, i thought WTF? Then I stood back and really looked at it and I got what Marky was going for. To me it's a Roth cartoon come to life, an art car if you will. Will it ever make a serious race car type pass? I doubt it, that wasn't the point. And I don't think it would go anywhere near straight if it did, not to mention the frame flex appears to be extreme, and I'm sure the hadling would be an E Ticket - but again, that isn't the point. I Dig It!
uh oh,i'll get the pop corn, a rat rod is usually a thrown together POS, there is a lot of work in this car, way too much to be one of "those", if you must call it a rat rod, call it a rat fink rod, much cooler, and something the rat fink would love to drive. but this car is by no means some thrown together piece of shit.
Wasn't the Term was coined by this group, for this car? And now its not good enough to describe it? Thats funny...
Thanks for the scans ollie. But, doesn't Robert Williams claim that he came up with the term "rat-rod" back in the days? Or doesn't credit go to Gray Baskerville for the term ? I don't know. I have heard all three of these mentioned before.
I just love the car. It seems lately that rat rod has become a derogatory term, It used to have a different meaning, then everyone who knows nothing about cars started calling every hot rod a rat rod. the current term seems to mean a poorly and quickly constructed rod that may or may not fall apart on it's first drive. Going by the current definition, I would never call this car one, This car is a real hot rod.
I've also heard these stories. But (if anyone gives a squat) the term "Rat" has been used to describe "beat" and/or cheap and hastely constructed motorcycles since at least the '7o's (when I first heard it).
its bad ass i love it but the motor dont have any wine to it does that iron lung even have any roots in it ?
