Kind of what I figured but I never heard em called bottle caps, always heard em called dog dish or poverty caps.

  3. My Uncle was looking for his cell phone the other day. Told me that he couldn't find it anywhere...while he was talking to me...on his cell phone. :)

  4. Couple of years ago I was looking for a pry bar in my pole barn/work shop - had a place I always kept it hanging: couldn't find it, got frustrated, went out and bought a new pry bar. Guess what I found today, in my daily driver's garage stall, on a wire shelf, up above the area I was cleaning out...need to put that pry bar back in the pole barn.

When I finally do find something, it is invariably in the last place I look!

If your NOW on good terms with your EX-wife, ask her if she sold them at the garage sale she had, when she was fighting with you over the divorce?

It will be a few weeks before the rims will be ready to install so I hope they show up by then,I have been searching in the house too with no luck so I might have to buy another set. My 37 Chevy p/u was apart for over 20 years and I found all the parts but that was over 15 years ago before CFS starting setting in.

I'll set a tool down and reach for it and it's gone. I start looking for it and get side tracked when I find something else and forget what I was doing in the first place.

You wrapped them in old T shirts and placed them under the couch so they wouldn't get damaged.
Hell, like everyone said, just buy another set. At least they're cheap. Imagine if you squirreled away a set of Ardun's and couldn't find them?
Happens to all of us. It's the reason I have 7 tape measures, 17 phillips screw drivers, etc.

The wife sits in a lawn chair and points out where I lay stuff down in the shop, when I can't find it. It's pretty much a full time job for her.

You are approaching this from the wrong angle. You are trying to remember where you put them 10 years ago.
You should be trying to remember WHO you gave them to 7 years ago. "Remember", you weren't ever going to need them again.

I don't need to wait years to loose things anymore. I've got that good at it I can do it in minutes.

Hell, this afternoon I gave up looking for a 3/8 ratchet and I know I have 4 of them and drove to town and bought a cheap ratchet and socket set to do the job I was doing. I've got a garage and four sheds full of stuff so it is a real challenge to find something I stashed away a few years ago.

  17. I had the same problem after I painted my 56 buick station wagon. I couldn't find the letters and the special that went on the side of it. I tore my garage apart. I thought I was going to have to buy some off flea bay . My wife came down and said isn't that them up on the top shelve in a plastic bag back above your work bench??Needless say I had to take her out to dinner that night. When all else fails look up.LOL. Bruce.

  18. Obviously I am a card carrying member of the hiding parts from myself club,I just recently found these brackets that help hold the radiator in the Ranch Wagon.

I looked for days for these parts and finally called Bob Owens and he sent me a pair
    to replace the lost parts.

I sandblasted & primed the parts and for some unknown reason I took them in the house and put them in my sock drawer.

Maybe someday i will find the small pieces of stainless trim that fit on the grill opening. HRP

As much as I would like to think I kept them there is a chance I could have sold them or gave them away and can not remember doing it,I had this 9 inch center section I took from a truck I parted out and tripped over it for years so when I went to look for it it was gone and turned out I gave it to my brother in law a year earlier and had no memory of doing it. I kind of doubt I got rid of them as I found the set of full hubcaps and the spare small cap in the basement, they probably got wrapped up and put away but will take years and buying another set for them to eventually show up so I think I am going to buy a set of 56 caps with the white centers since it will match my white top much better then the red centers of the 55 caps. I am glad I am not the only one that does this.

Then sometimes you find an acorn or two- I was digging thru the shelves in my (not so) clean room the other day for some FE parts, and found some NIB Crane long pushrods for shell lifters and Isky rockers, remember them as swap meet finds, but I really don't remember where or when I got the new Erson roller rockers, still in a shipping box...

Maybe you really know where they are, Its just that you subconsciously don't want to find them because you really want the white centered 56 ones:D

Even though I would prefer the white centered 56 caps I really can not remember where I put them, all I would have to do is repaint the red centers white and I would have what I want. I know I did not let them go and probably boxed them up and put them somewhere where my brain will not let me remember, lately I have been moving parts from where they sat for years but my brain only remembers the original location so time to search in the house.

Update the hub caps have been found, they were close to where I thought they were supposed to be but were so dirty that they blended in with the wood in the rafters. I think I was expecting them to shine but they were nasty from being up there almost 17 years and covered up with dust from doing the body work on the 55 and were slightly hidden by a pair of 216 valve covers. I also think I did not drink enough finding fluid (beer) so after a couple I was able to see them.

  28. I tend to put things in "safe" places. And every time I want to use the parts, I do the scavenger hunt dealie.. which takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 months.

I was looking for my Hurst shifter from my '65 Chevy and it was in the original box since 1983 and in a safe place. I find it, mice built a nest in the box and the chrome is pitted in places... but now there are TWO handles in the box. No idea where the 2nd one came from.

Gad you found them. The old saying goes you find them in the last place you look but I usually find them in the first place I look but I have to look in that place several times.

I looked over that spot at least 4 times.
