I have to bore the taper in the wheel to the larger Model A size. Can anyone tell me the the correct size taper before I go hunting for the tool?
I think it would be the right time to install a 32-34 steering box for the much improved 15 to 1 ratio, and then the banjo wheel would be a bolt on !
It might be easier to splice the top of a 38 ford shaft onto your steering shaft. Steering shafts are not heavily stressed by the driver’s effort, especially if you have power steering.
Chris it looks to be a easy task to open up the taper but with the key way in the taper it will follow the slot for the key and be oblong and incorrect. If your doing it on a mill or lathe it can be done. As @rusty valley suggested a later box such as a 1932-1934 would be a better box. You can interchange to steering box snout with your 1930-1931 and remove the 1932-34 snout splice . This way it’s a direct bolt on but with a later shaft . You may have to adjust your new length depending on the application.
I've done this. I could not find a correct reamer so after talking to a few machinists I found one that was close and then hand filed it to fit. My machinist friend joked a patient man with a file is better than a tool with a bad operator. Its fits fine and has been on there for years. I did have to refile the keyway.
