I am in the process of rodding a 1939 Chrysler, I want to put a 440/904 in has anyone done this? Can I get away with motor mounts and a crossmember? My past says that I need a Mustang II front end. I would like to add disc brakes but stay away from all that front end conversion, is it possible?

Any thing is possible just takes so tring this and that. You can use the stock front axle and adapt disc to it i started to do a 1935 dodge but someone came along and bought the car before i got it done. and just used a cross member and motor mounts.

don't swap that front end for a mustang---I am running a stock front end under my 39 dodge--easy to add a rear steer rack and pinion from any k-car chrysler---disc conversions are easy and availiable--my dodge floats down the road--very smooth-- no susp problems at all---the stock front end is better than any mustang 2---and face it all a mustang 2 is is a pinto--and they drove like*****

I agree and disagree .. The mustang 2 option is ok, my little truck drives like a dream, there are 1000's on the road ..many have 10's of 1000's of miles and multiple years of service ..
(what they made back in the day "stock" is not what they sell today to do this )

But, they do make some bolt on , min fab parts that you can achieve what you want somewhat ..

Yes, you can stuff a big block Mopar in it , its a bit of work to do it but now awful ..depends on skill, shop and tools too

www.fatmanfab.com has most of the parts for either swap

the transmission won't be a 904 if you're running a 440, all 440s came with 727's for automatics, 904's were for sixes and small blocks

& they were about maxed out behind a 318! Wrong bell pattern also.

I absolutely agree that there is no need to clip it. My 40 has stock suspension AND brakes and rides beautifully. However, my 360 BARELY fits, so you'll need to do some thinking to get a 440 in there.

A 904 is a 727 in a different case, basically. A 904 will handle whatever you want to throw in front of it!

And moparforlife is correct - the 904 was only available behind a Six or a Mopar small block.

    The 440/727 in a '39 is a great idea!
