I need to install breathers in my 354 Hemi. When I acquired the engine it had no breathers and the oil filler tube is blocked off. Can I use the typical push in breathers and if so where can I put them A nice set of Spectre push in type came with the project but it seems these kind are not used on the old Hemis. Thanks Joe
No they are not! Sell those to the chevy boys and install something like these from Hot Heads. I put one in each cover but I kinda wish I had done 2 in each cover. I also had to add an oil filler in the right cover. I welded in nuts inside that one to accept the Donovan filler neck, also from Hot Heads .
I don't know why you'd need four. We only had two on our Bonneville engine that turned 7500+. The pictured one has been on my 354" Chrysler for over a dozen years and don't think I need another.
I ran four of the Moon breathers just because I liked the way it looked. At first I had it set up where all four were open but once I got my adjustable PCV valve I decided to block the back one on each valve cover because I was afraid it would never pull a vacuum on the crankcase with so many openings. Like Bandit Billy I put the oil filler on the valve cover but used a swivel water neck.
FWIW, Hot Heads also makes a pair where one has a PCV valve and the other furnishes air to the crankcase. Different base angles to fit your rocker covers. I agree with BB, the engine looks more balanced with four, even with two blocked.
I did 2 on mine, both in the front of the covers. One on passenger side is fixed. One on driver's side has the top come off and I pull the foam filter so I can fill oil. I also asdded a 1/2" electrical conduit coupling into the back of the valley cover with hose fitting to add a PCV valve. View attachment 5302079
My 354 has a pcv in the road draft hole and a vented cap on the oil fill tube in the valley pan. Will that be enough ventilation for a street driven motor?
Yes but you also need a fresh air inlet somewhere in the system. Vented oil filler cap or breather somewhere.
It is funny to note, when I said I had seen a HEMI with four breathers the other the day...it was yours! LOL! Sweet swept side BTW.
Unless this is a race engine that will get frequent tear-downs, you really should have more than just breathers. You should have a functioning PCV system. The benefits are numerous.
I have a complete Spectre breather system with the PVC setup. Is it not workable to use this system on a Hemi, that is the push in type?
Please do not diminish the dignified grandeur of a legendary Hemi by appending it with cheap parts-store junk. You wouldn't put a plastic wrist band on a Rolex, would you?
If I've EVER seen an engine that screams for 'another' 4 barrel carb...this one does!! Sweet look'in engine set-up....I like it(except for the single carb.!) 6sally6
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just bought this kit from HH, but it didn't come with the little instruction leaflet. Hard to make out from the picture, but looks like it says "Drill 18 9/32" holes". Can anyone confirm? I can't make out any of the text below that though. Thanks!
Yeah, I found my set, but they also do not have any instructions! My advice is to trace the gasket on a piece of paper, and lay out that same pattern of holes. It does say 9/32", but there are 20-holes there. Two rows of nine, with a single at each end, between the rows.
As was said, yes. Should be noted that from the factory there was a rubber sheet hanging from the intake across the lifter valley to force air flow from going directly to the back.
