Putting together a budget plan for the A bone sedan so I can see what I need and if I can afford it right now (new vs used).. I have never bought a rear end so can some of you provide in insite to how much I should expect to pay for a used 8" (maverick) or 9" (57-59) Ford Rearend.. out of a wrecking yard/ swapmeet.. ( i know i will need to do the brakes which I have put on the list) Thanks
I saved a 8" from the crusher for $60. (still running the breaks that came with the rearend) sometimes you can buy the whole maveric for $100. they fit great but it is next to impossable to find a used posi for one.... i have been looking for a year. the cheapest way that i have found to burn'em both is about $310. I think it is called track lock or something. on the other hand the small 9" that i found probably needed new bearings ect. becouse it had been mudded like crazy. they wanted $300 but it was posi with 4:11 gears. I went with the 8" becouse money was tight.
You can find a Maverick rear out here (Calif) for 100-175 complete drum to drum. 57-59 9" rears are getting harder to find, around 300. A full service wrecker will stick you pretty good for either. Theres gotta be a HAMBer closer to you that has an extra..
You might want to consider a banjo with a buggy spring.I don't know what kind of power your planning on.
You can spend the same money on a 8"or a 9" I guess your looking for 57-59 9" because you won't have to cut it down for you sedan ? if so then that may make harder to find and more expenive I would look for a 8" they are easy to find and somtimes cheaper because of what they are in. But if your looking for a posi rear in a 8" they are big money 350-450 dollars.
For a 9" cheap, here's the skinny: Get one from an early Bronco. The pumpkin is in the center, they're narrow, and 5 1/2" bolt pattern. Most yards don't know this. Tell them your fixing your ole Bronco up for some deer huntin'
I havn't seen a Mavrick up here in years. Shouldn't have any trouble finding an 8.8 out of an Explorer or Ranger. A couple different ratios available,I think most had limited slip, early ones are drums,56 1/4" wide. But they are ugly.

Thanks for the info... I thought about the bronco and now that I believe someone is making a diskbrake with a 5x5.5 that would work.. I had thought about drums but will be a little modern and go disk.. As for a banjo, I do not think it will hold up to the beating I plan to give it. I guess I will post a wanted note to see if any local HAMBers have one...
If you are going HiBoy style.......the 9" is the only way to go IMHO. The 57 -59 Ford is 2 inches wider than a 5 lug Maverick (only 1 inch PER SIDE). Get FlamedAbone to show you to Temples ......or I will. He has, at last count, over a dozen 57 - 59 Fords with the rears still under them. We cut a 57 Ford rear down .....easy..... to 55and 1/2 inches..that's 1/2 a inch more narrow than a 5 lug Maverick. On a 57 - 59 rear end, the long axle is 30.5 on a 65 .......it has a 29.5 On a 57 -58 rear end, the short axle is 26.5 We buy a 25 incher from Moser..... or shorten the 30.5 long down to 25. Here is the Strange aluminum one under my Deuce. It takes about 22 lbs off the unsprung weight.
wanted? i got a 9 incher(tee hee ) from a 59 ford wagon parts car,and two chunks.i think the installed one is a 3.89 gear set, from a six cylinder wagon.the other chunk i don't remember, but could look tomorrow. 250.00 with chunk of your choice.will be in as removed condition,do not think its a posi, comes with shock mounts and e-brake bridle.
I am running an 8.8 in our Ranchero and a Granada 8.7 or whatever in our Falcon... 8" and 9" axles are readily available but getting posis for them are not cheap, especially the 8". OTOH, 8.8s are readily out there and all the gears and lockers are easily available and reasonably priced. 8.8s aren't traditional though.... 8" axles are in most Mustang/Falcon/Comets (pre-69 narrower) Granada and Monarch and Maverick has a slightly wider axle than before - Some have the 8.7 axle which are heavy duty but have no aftermarket. Narrow 9" are in late 50s Fords.
If you buy the rear end from a wrecker, don't tell them it's for a "rod" they seem to confuse us with guys who have gold chains around their necks and big fat wallets.Do like the one fella said and tell em it's for your hunting truck.
I paid $40 for an 8" (granada). The minispool was like $30. As long as you stay with skinny tires, you shouldn'y have any problems twisting axles. Plus you get to squeel tires every time you turn.
Boones I am buliding a 8" for my Tudor project. Fits nice and is cheap to rebuild. By the way is this your wagon from the Talahassee show this spring?
Levis, ya that is my wagon before I put the wider whitewalls on it... What is the width of the Granada rear? Randy... can you provide some more detail... are the 57-59 offset centers so shortening up the one side centers it? or are you taking a different year?
Stealth, sent you a note back.... For those with sedans, What width rearends are you using.. Are the 28/29 the same as the 30/31.
The Maverick rear is just right for a Model A with fenders and no wierd offset on the wheels. The Mustang is 3/4 inch wider per side so you have to run wheels offset to the inside by that much to fit under the fenders the same. I believe the early Bronco is the same as a Maverick for width. But don't quote me on that one. Then there's the International Scout. It fits Model A's too.

[/ QUOTE ] The long axle is 30.5 and the short one is 26.5 on a 57 - 59 Ford rear end. You can use a 65 - 66 axle (29.5) and narrow one side 1 inch with a stock Ford axle shaft. A shortened axle (that is 25) will get you to 55.5 wide. Lee Hooks 32 Victoria ( a All Deuces club member) was done this way. He has 8" Halibrands and needed to be in the 55 to 56 inch range. Narrowing the housing is a piece of cake .... Took 1" out of 1 side and 1.5 out of the other. Broncos are 58" vs Mavericks 56" I have a Bronco under my 32. Willard ( the former owner of your 29 sedan ) has a Bronco under the Deuce 5 Window you saw. We had to use some car axles to move it to 4.5 pattern. The only real good reason (IMHO) for a Bronco to be used is the 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern. For a 4.5 wheel pattern........the 57 - 59 Ford is the same width as a Bronco and MUCH easier to find. For a Model A Hiboy.......a stock 57 - 59 works great.
Thanks Deuce.... Now, does it look funny having the pumpkin off centered.. ifI do not go with a 32 tank and keep it bobbed, the rear will be out in the open for all to see.... or is the pumpkin centered and the yoke off center?
