Q for 47-54 GM Pickup owners (rear axle location)

When changing to an open driveline does the axle need to move back 1.5 or 2.5 inches?

I've read both. I don't have a box yet so mocking it up first isn't an option.

 

just measured a 54 of my neighbors and it looks like 2.25 to 2.5. the drive line isn't attached to the trans so it's a close eyeball and tape measure.
