Q for the AZ guys

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C9, Nov 15, 2003.

  1. Is Arizona pretty accepting of highboys or do they tend to bust the fenderless cars?

Right now, it's still against the law in Sunny California to run fenderless in an over 1500# vehicle, but the thinking is, if you're behaving the gendarmes pretty much leave you alone.

The 32, I hope to keep fenderless.
The 31 has bobbed rear fenders and cycle fenders are in the works for the front.

Any other Arizona pecadillo's I should know about?

Assuming an AZ pecadillo isn't a cross between a peccary and an armadillo....

Quick question for you Jay. Are you moved into the new digs lock, stock and barrel already??

  3. Not yet.
Just trying to think ahead a little bit.

We have a house ready to go in AZ and are still in the process of selling this house, but it should go fast as it's a sellers market right now.
I wish I had a real specific date cuz I hate to shut down the shop too soon.
Did that once and it was a pain when I needed to do a few things with very few tools.

Sweetie's been packing stuff and the once empty living room is full of boxes.
The living room empty cuz we had two couches, one in the living room and one in the family room.
Sweetie gave one couch and chair to daughter as we won't have room for it in the new house.
We're scaling back as far as size goes.
Sweetie has a bad back and can't keep up with this big ol house and I ain't too fond of working on the half acre of landscaping.
Not when there are more interesting projects in the garage.

'Sides, Arizona houses have rock lawns .. imagine ... life without lawnmowers....

Jay -- My heart goes out to you, pal. Moving is a tough gig, particularly for acquisitive old farts like us. I've been thinking about moving to AZ to be closer to my oldest/bestest pal and his wife, and I've also condidered moving to the center of Nevada where another great hot-roddin' pal lives, just a little bit our of the way on the way to Bonneville.

    Then I think about all the work that's involved . . .

Jay, I have found AZ to be very cool about laws. Remember I ran my slicks for three years and never any problem, and that was on a fenderless car which really was obvious when sitting behind it in a cop car.

    True words.
I've been thinking for years that I keep carrying stuff into this house and haven't been carrying anything out.
    Not just the garage either.

We're doing ok as far as moving goes and both of us are looking forward to a new adventure of living not only in another town and another state, but a whole new area.
The two of us are left coast kids, born and raised in Ventura.
During my Edison career, we lived in Rialto near San Bernardino, a couple of citrus oriented towns and nowadays in the middle of America's produce belt.
We, like you, spent a lot of time in the dez with the two wheelers - Sweetie had her own dirt bike - but we never lived in the dez.
The area around Kingman is a little different than the California dez, a bit like New Mexico scenery-wise.
It's also 30 miles up the hill from Laughlin's bright lights and The River and about 85-90 miles or so from Lake Havasu where they put on the River Run.
Plus, rumors are they are trying to put in a dragstrip just outside Kingman.
Best part is we're gonna be about 90 minutes away from older daughter and family who live in North Las Vegas.

Did I mention Route 66 is just north from the house?

A moving company is moving the house proper, I'm doing the garage and roadsters.
In fact, here's a pic of my 20'4" long inside moving system.
Which converts to a temp garage once we get there.
At least until I get the garage/shop set up.

I'm going to enjoy being close to my family.
And I'm sure you can understand the appreciation grandson has for the 32....

AZ is easy of fenderless vehicles for the most part. I hear Kingman really watches them though.. LOL

We just passed through Kingman a couple of times last week for the trip to and from the SEMA event.

A friend of our's lives there. Greg Holman of REF Unlimited. He builds custom headers and other stuff too. He is into off-road race stuff. Greg's dad worked for Hooker Headers for many years and is retired in Kingman from CA.

My wife and I always enjoyed our trips through Kingman. And speaking of Route 66, ten years ago or so we were members of tha Arizona Route 66 association and made an annual trip up there. The meeting place is in Seligman north of Kingman and the cars wander down the old highway spending the night there in Kingman. Next day the drive continues on old 66 up through Oatman and finishes down near the river in Golden Shores. I believe it's the longest continuous piece of 66 left in the country. At any rate, it was a trip my wife and I loved to make each year in one of our cars and I suggest you check it out. You havn't lived until you rumble into Oatman Arizona in a highboy roadster!! I believe it goes down in April, look into it and have fun.

    C9,
I've been running my 27 with no fenders for a while now and haven't had any problems either. In fact, I asked a Gilbert Police officer I play softball with if there's anything I COULD be pulled over for. Granted, he's a cool guy, but he said he wouldn't worry about anything.

I've seen so many out here without fenders that I have been under the impression that it was legal here.

It is still the wild and wooly west.. well as long as new transplants don't try and change our laws when they move here.

Cars and guns are welcome...and so are you C9!

  14. Hey C9
I have been running my hiboy model A coupe with no fenders for about a year and a half and no problems. Unlike Phoenix, crusin is legal and is going on every friday and saturday night. Lots of cops around though but never said anything to me. Also talked to John Carter at the Old Ford Store and he said of all his years of building cars he has never had a problem. Welcome to AZ and if you and the misses ever come down here, your have personal tour guide around these parts. Lots of history down here and some cool stuff as well. When I get my 32 on the road real soon, it needs to go through inspection for licence so will find out then for sure. I will let you know on the outcome.

    Jay,

I volunteer for the Lake Havasu City PD and this AM I asked one of the older officers about the "fender law" in AZ. He told me that as long as your car has a windshield and one taillight, you are good to go. Maybe you'll want to double check with the MVD when you go to get your plate, just to be sure. The hardest part of moving here from CA is calling the MVD the MVD instead of the DMV.

Just for your info, LHC is only 60 miles from Kingman. Maybe you went through Bullhead City to get here if you went 90 miles [IMG] or maybe you will be living 30 miles east of Kingman.

Let us know when you are moved and officially a Zonie.
