Picked up a free quad 4 today, rip off the cowling on the motor and found it looks pretty good. If I use this motor , what kind of bellhousing could be used to run rear wheel drive?
Seems to me about a year or so ago, one of the mags did an article on Quad 4s, I want to say Street Rodder, but not sure. I know there was someone that had bell housings and other stuff to make them work as a rear drive setup. Thought of doing one myself if a good engine came my way. Might do a Google search on Quad 4, something might come up.
Quad 4s are famous for blowing head gaskets. You might want to try to determine if the head gasket is blown before you put too much time and money into it. If you know a good mechanic, you can run it and hook the radiator up to one of those ****yzers that tells you if there's exhaust gases in the coolant. My son blew up two gaskets in his Quad 4 car, roughly every 50,000 miles. The second time the head cracked and he had a hell of a time finding another head that wasn't also cracked looking through junkyards.
Someone's been reading my mind. I recently saw a magazine, where they put a Quad 4 in a Bonneville roadster and went over 200mph. Lokked really *****in with throttle bodies made to look like webers and 4 zoomy headers stickin' out the other side. For a minute I thought it was an old Offenhauser. Will check out the website. Thanks, JT
Check the head real well, I did a Q4 for a friend and the first head he brought me had 8 cracks in it and most were down in the ports and irrepairable. Great motor though, it really wails like a banchie in his sand rail.
WOW, despite the hefty prices, this equipment is really cool. The hell with SBC, I want to build a Rod with one of these motors. I think Lil' John ****era's new project should have one of these mills. The article in this months Street Rodder, stated he was/is an advocate of exotic powerplants. JT
Both the Quad4rods bell housings and the Manapart units are good quality. I have one of each. It is hard to buy them used, though. There are plenty of good heads or "remans" using new castings for good prices these days. Use the latest Victor head gaskets and a set of ARP bolts or better yet, studs to hold the head down. You may want to look at the threads in the block if you get that far. They may need inserts to hold clamping pressure.
Recently purchase a 32 Ford with a Quad4 and a T5 transmission. In the process fo replacing the T5 with a C4 and a bellhousing from QUAD4 ROD in denver. Going to replace the computer and fuel injection with weber carbs and a coil pack. Biggest problem so far is getting the right torque converter for the swap. Anyone on here that has done this transmission swap? thanks
