I'm enjoying this build ..... thanks Quain.

  2. Quain, here is the Camaro that Virgil "killed" to use the body for a Sunoco
shootout car in '91. The chassis was cut up and thrown in the trash right away. When he moved from Ca. to SC. the chrome straight axle and pontiac rearend/ladder bar setup went in the trash too. Sorry if anyone lusted after this car and hoped to find it, but I know for a fact it is gone.
Far as remember the body and first attempt at a "Pro Mod" chassis were
"still born" and ended up in the scrap heap too. PS. He bought the car at the Pomona swapmeet for $1500.00. Wonder what the restored car might be worth today? 69SPRINGNATSDALLASTX-HrudkaBros-AAG.jpg

  3. Tell him he can be involved with you when he gets the "Mr. Gasket" Camaro back. As a side note, he is not aware of what he destroyed, I recognized the car a couple years ago after seeing these pic's. I have one more of it leaving the starting line against the Herrera Bros. Austin at Pomona in '69 but it won't up load for some reason. I never shared this revelation of the Camaro's heritage with Virgil in the past cause I never figured he'd care anyway. I know plenty of cars met this same fate in the past, just thought it was kind of remarkable seeing he want to be a Gasser Guru now.

Quain, thanks for taking the time to do a thread on the build.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how you came to the final result which is down right bad ass!
I've always loved Willys coupes, but not at all in my price range..so seeing your's, and Don Moyers Rebel Reaper sure make it easier to go with glass..
Done right, it makes no difference what the body is, plus is sure makes is less painful IF something were to go wrong.
    VERY NICE.

Thanks again, i'll be following along.

Tony that's why I did a glass car because I'm not going to have any mercy on this car. It would be a shame to do a metal body that way. As for all ya'll that don't like glass body's This winter I am going to be restoring Gene (Moonlighter ) Cromer's A/G 41 Willys back to exactly the way it was in around 1965.

I guess we will do engine and trans mounts tonight. I'm going to use side mounts instead of a motor plate again going to a lot of trouble trying to be old school. I just drilled a hole in the right place you can see the lines where I'm going to cut you will see the reason for the hole in the last pic[IMG]

Bent down and cut the bushing has a 1/2 hole 120 wall tubing Don't forget to leave enough material to roll around the end of the bushing. You can tell by the bad welding I had a gap to fill my saw didn't cut straight from one side to the other still need to be welded around the ends.I sanded the bad weld off and redid it later I don't usually do that but I didn't want to make these over.[IMG]

Now for the trans cross member 1x2 with .083 wall building I built it strong because it's going to also act as a chassis cross member. I milled a flat spot on the tubing so it will set right on the trans mounting flange. The bushing have a 7/16 hole for the trans bolt.[IMG]

I'll bet the memories behind those trophies are worth more than the expense to get them. They are something to be very proud of. Pro mod is no easy class to be successful at. Best show in modern drag racing.

The finished cross member 3/8 bushings in each end, there are 2 on each end so it will keep the chassis form moving around at that point.[IMG]

Yea I've got a lot of miles on my body because of those little men. The 2 that mean the most to me would have to be The Don Carlton sportsman of the year in 1997 and the Car Craft magazine Pro Mod driver of the year in 2001, it got me a hug from Linda(Miss Hurst)Vaughn it's in my office. That was the last year they did that.

This is the best pic I have of the motor mount's installed. The alumn. plate at the front was to hold ever thing in place while I fit all this stuff. I left it there to do all the welding to help keep things from warping. [IMG]

The petals are 7/8 x 083 the pivot at the bottom is 1 1/4 tubing with a 1' hole there will be a shaft that runs through them both.[IMG]

Another peace of 1 1/4 with 1' hole tube is welded through the chassis. A 1" tube will run all the way through and stick out with bracket welded on to pull the clutch fork back the clutch petal will bolt to the tube it will work as one unit. then the brake petal will just pivot on the tube and have a bracket welded on the bottom to push the master cylinder. That bracket that is tacked on with the wire welder (Wayne) is just there to hold the body in place it will come off later.[IMG]

Installed filler panel. In this pic you can also see a small part of the glass work that I had to do around the fire wall area. It had a stock fire wall when I cut it out I had to build a lip back for the fire wall to bolt to. Note I said bolt I don't use rivets unless there is no other way.[IMG]

The other side. You can also see the seat mounts I just bent sone .090 4130 plate nothing trick. The bar you see is tied in to the highest point of the frame rail and goes under the seat. It's not period correct but it's hid in the end.[IMG]

Finished seat mounts. You can also see that I had to make me a shifter stick to get rid of that star wars looking thing that was in here in the pics that was posted earlier.[IMG]

With both seats and that man stick sticking up between them. Ya'll don't have any idea how much trouble I had finding low back seats. High backs just don't look right in an old school gasser.[IMG]
