Technical "Quart" of Bondo is a joke

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by willys36, Nov 8, 2023.

  1. Just bought a quart can with some Bondo in it. When I opened it couldn't believe what was in the can. It is generous to say the can was half full. I expected it to be down an inch or two but this was ridiculous.

    sold by weight or volume?

and was it Bondo brand, or something more reputable?

  3. If you buy a gallon, on the side it says .8 tenths. They started doing that a few years ago instead of raising the price. 2 years ago, they raised the price. :) Some of the higher quality fillers were doubled.

"Bondo" brand is now made by 3M. I have noticed less in a fresh can. I only use Rage Gold. High quality filler.

Inflation rears it's ugly head in two ways.......increased price or smaller size/reduced volume. Goes on in the grocery store every day.

It seems like anything I buy has this scam built into it! I believe there are consumer laws which cove this sort of thing, weights and measures, but never heard of them being enforced. And the pandemic just seem give give license to everyone to be a god damn thief!

Boy no kidding! Been buying the same brand wheat bread for ever and a little while back I noticed the slices were a fair bit smaller. Pretty soon I'll have to make two sandwiches for lunch.

"quart" can of Bondo. Doesn't say anything about there being a quart inside, does it?

only EVER buy premium fillers ... evercoat ,, rage gold is my fav ,, lets say a gallon ,, of the good stuff is 40-70 bux more than the crappy stuff ,, any idea how much sanding is involved with a entire gallon , good stuff sands nice (time and paper) , spreads smoothly (less sanding ) less pinholes (less reapplication ) feathers nicly (better adhesion) and dosent plug up the paper as sticky top layer (material and paper wasted ) so there is ZERO savings buying anything but the good stuff , then if you buy POWDERED GUIDCOAT its a fine black powder that you rub with a included sponge pad on while you work finds scratches ,pinholes and low/high spots in a jiffy way better than the spray can method and misses nothing i couldent do it without it ,,

It's called Shrinkflation...Same can/box, less product same or higher price...and fingers pointing everywhere for who to blame...wait for it...corporate greed and shareholder profits...enjoy your palm full of bondo...;)

Don't worry they'll make the can smaller soon because that costs money too...and the price still won't come down...We live in interesting times indeed...

We have all heard it said..."less is more". Less product for more money, in this case.

Who remembers when a fifth of whiskey was really a fifth? (1979)

or when a half gallon of ice cream was really a half gallon? (2002)

the list goes on and on.

"Capitalism 101" doesn't explain or justify a container half full of product.

If you think that is bad look at the size of candy bars now compared to the 1960's.

The day you can cut your expenses by a few percent without changing the sale price is a good day......
..... if you are the seller.

I prefer premium filler too. I too am more concerned about the half gallon of ice cream going to only 1.5 pints.

    Squirrel;
Go to Costco, super premium vanilla, half gal sizes, 2 to a box. Good stuff. Costs ~ what the 1.25->1.5 gal of chemical air-whipped crap in grocery stores cost.

you have to pay to get into costco, don't you?

  24. I gotta buy this stuff! Every time I buy a can of bog, I will use 3 tablespoons of the stuff, then the can sits on the shelf for a year or more, so when it comes time to use some again, it has all gone to crap and dried out. Anyway, no one on here uses this stuff, do they (wink wink)?

The principle of putting less its standard container is know as "shrinkflation". We bought gallons of automotive grade urethane paint for a non HAMB vehicle and found the the can was down the amount of hardener to be added and a little less. we felt a little ripped on that paint. The food industry has been doing this for awhile. The product quantity is reduced while the producers maintain the price. If the consumer is not paying attention then they think all is good. Its a deceptive practice. Another trick is grocery stores will put a special sticker on a shelf. Doesn't mean its a sale only trying to get attention. Also people assume economy sized products are just that but pay attention as the price per unit like an ounce may actually be lower in the smaller box. Stores here give the price per unit beside the item's cost posted on the shelf.

In Europe, they only get a liter of gas for the price of a gallon.

just trying save you from using it as a filler . metal work should be used to fill in and shape. BONDO used as a skim coat.
