I am thinking changing to quarter eliptical spring set up, in the front to rear layout(paralel to the chassis) I have some ideas of how it will work, but I was looking for some examlples and ideas from others that have them. If any any one has any photos or experience with them any help is appriciated! Thanks
There are 3 different chassis in these pics. One a modified I'm building, one a 32 roadster and one for a 32 sedan I'm building.
You will, I'm sure, hear otherwise, but good engineering dictates that you do not use the spring as a locating member. The reason being that as the spring flattens out, it lengthens. As it lengthens, it will change the caster (if on a front axle) and in a rear axle application it will change the pinion angle. You may hear "well, Joe ran one for years and never had any problems with it". True, it will work, but it's just not good engineering. If you're gonna build it from scratch, why not do it right?
Thanks for the photos, some very nice work there, I don't plan on using the springs to locate the axle, the axle will be located by the trailing arms and the panhard bar, and the springs must have hanger shackles that allow the rotate through their arc of travel without causing a bind of the suspension components. I have a 42 ford front axle what is the best way to attach the spring hanger to it?
Chrysler used an elongnated spring eye eliminating the shackle in the late 70s early 80s, always thought they would work good quarter eleptics. My T used normal quarter electic design with a slider slot in the axle bracket, not a great idea in looking back. But the idea in general has great merit as I see Posies now offers them in kit form.
