  1. Thanks, if that’s correct I can possibly see another flywheel mod in my future.
The more info the better as it only adds to the options.

    Thanks again

Thanks for keeping us updated @lumpy 63 my project is on the back burner till the spring but it’s nice to see what parts and mods are needed. I wonder if a Ford style TKO600 would bolt up without any issues? Seems like a lot of figuring with how expensive these were originally.

Yes the Ford TKO is a bolt up, which is most likely what I will end up with.

So what is the spline count?
I guess I should clarify. What TREMEC shaft spline count and diameter did you opt for? 10 spline? I’m not a stick guy, even though I feel the need for this one to be....

I know the later ford is 26 spline input, not sure if you can get different input shafts or not on the Ford style TKO transmissions

What type of makeup for the disc do you guys look for on the street? It's been so long since I bought a clutch disc, that they have so many new options , that I don't even know where to start.

I will probably use 26 spline input and I have had good luck with Mcleod diaphram street clutch's ,rated to 450 hp? nothing fancy organic lining etc...But its not like I'm gonna slick this thing up:p

Chris the starter plate is 1/8" thick , the measurement from the block face to trans mounting surface is 7.0625

  9. Thanks for that, I’ll check that against the flywheel and clutch assembly that I’ve set up .
Hopefully it will be close enough to only need slight mods.

    Cheers

Started installing a QuickTime bell to a 57 365 last night. I was basically looking for a good deal on any trans that would work with this bell housing. Came across a used Ford style TKO 600 that the guy had switched out for an automatic.

There is this disc just resting in the end of the crank which came out with no issue.

Purchased this pilot bushing from Wilcap that he added a ford size bronze insert to.

Mcleod clutch and pressure plate kit. For some reason it was cheaper to buy this GM kit and then purchase a Ford throw out bearing separate.

I’ll post up more later today when I have it all fit up.

Does anyone know if the bellhousing pattern on the older 365/390 engines is the same as the later 472/500 engines.
My understanding was that they are different engines but that may not be completely true.

How about the 429? Is that the same as the 390 etc.?

I think 64 429 is the same. It was a one year only deal. But dont quote me on that:p

I'm curious because my first car was a 1964 Cadillac with a TH400 trans. It had an adapter of some kind between the engine and transmission.
    A very nice drivetrain.

Correct , It is my understanding that adapter works to install a later Cad t 400 to an earlier 390.

Finished installing the transmission today TKO 600 to 57 Cadillac 365. As @lumpy 63 posted before, you have to drill out the two lower bolt holes on the flange and both starter holes I had to drill and tap 7/16.
The snout of the dodge starter hits the bellhousing, I chose to shave about 3/16” off the snout.
The pilot bushing needs to be flush with the end of the crank for clearance.
I had to trim the tip of the input shaft about 3/16” to have some clearance to the back of the crank.
All in all not too bad, took a couple hours to figure it all out and that bastard is heavy so take all your measurements first and make the modifications without pulling the trans off and on 10 times.

Did you have to trim down the length of the pilot bushing? It looked quite long to me. Also did you have any issues with the input shaft collar ? My trans is a T5 but will probably use a TKO 600.

Yes I had to cut the pilot bushing down to a little over 1/2” in length. The collar to clutch hub clearance was about 1/4” , I didn’t trim it any hopefully that’s enough room.

Thanks , I also had issues with the bell in the starter area . had to remove the powder coating around the area where the starter nose cone is.

Earlier in this thread there is mention of a 2005-2008 ram manual trans starter. I tried it but it doesn’t fit, the solenoid hits the oil pan well before the mounting holes would line up. Just a heads up to save someone the hassle.

I just noticed that this flywheel appears to have a lathe turned finish, rather than Blanchard ground.
A ground finish is generally considered a better clutch mating surface.
I used to grind flywheels at an auto machine shop, and we only lathe turned them when the flywheel was a deeply recessed type that didn't fit on our grinding machine.
