I just got 1929 New York License Plates for my coupster does anyone know what the letter and number on the left side of the plate mean if anything? Any help would be great
The numbers on the left designate the county code of the county the plates were issued in. 1929 was the only year NYS used the small letter over the number format. I have a book listing the county codes, if the two plates you show in the pics have any significance to you.
Intrestiing thank you, the plates I bought have a Y over a 6, do you know where they were from? And can you look up what the code was fro the Bronx or Throggs Neck. Thank You TagMan
X/9 was issued in Putnam County and X/6 was issued in Ostego County. The book I'm using "License Plate County Codes Of The United States And Canada" by Boyd, Tanner & Davis, doesn't list any codes for any years previous to 1930 for the Bronx. They must not have been able to find that info - sorry.
I am interested in the 1929 designation for Yates County NY. Also what County does X/1 denote? I think that I have asked before - please humor me. Thanks in advance
I am interested in the combination for Yates County NY 1929 if that is in the book. Also, what NY County is the code X/1? I have asked before, please humor me. Thanks in advance.
The book "License Plate County Codes of the United States and Canada" by Boyd/Tanner & Davis (1995), lists 1929 license plates assigned for Yates County, as J/4 65-01 thru J/5 30-00. The X/1 20-01 thru X/2 70-00 were issued from the Schenectady, NY DMV office. Hope that helps. -Bob
Recently purchased NY plates for my 1929 Model A. Looking to identify the county code/location for R7 and the county code for "Ontario County, NY". I googled the above-mentioned book, but no copies are available. Thanks in advance for the help!
@TagMan Bob jumping on the bandwagon since this came up and others are asking. I have a couple of 1933 Ohio plates and they also have what look like the same codes. One is an X over 2, the other is an X over a 5. Cant get out to the shop for pics right now. Years ago some one told me they were dealer plates but I'm looking for more accurate info and you seem to have it. Thanks

I thought the answer would be easy to provide, so I went to my reference material and found.....NOTHING listed for Ohio, before 1935! I then went and googled the history of Ohio license plates and found....NOTHING again, prior to 1935. I found several photos of 1933 Ohio plates, but saw no consistancy. One site claimed that the following alpha/numeric numbering sequences were used: A-12345 AB-1234 12345-A 1234-AB A-1234-A To confuse the situation further, I found a matched pair of '33 Ohio plates numbered D15-494, but the "D" was half the size of the numbers. I would guess they were "Dealer" plates, but that's just my guess. The only other recourse would be to check the ALPCA (Automobile License Plate Collectors Association) and see if they have a forum or other records, to answer your question. I would have done so, but I'm no longer an active collector, and left the organization a few years ago. You need to be an active member to access their info. Sorry I'm not able to provide an answer for you. -Bob
Would it be possible to look up county code “H6,” for a NY plate? I just found an old plate from 1929. It’s in rough shape from being in a creek, but I can make out the digits. Thanks!
Glad to help. According to the book "License Plate Codes for the United States and Canada", 1929 NYS plates with the numbers H/6 50-01 through H/8 20-00 were all issued for Ostego County.
