Okay, I know there's probably lots of sites on the web about it. But I'm wondering, when is best time to go out to Bonneville? Last time I was there was '97 or '98 when our daughter was stationed at Hill AFB (SLC). We drove over to Wendover mainly to see the place where the B29s tested for the WWII atomic stuff. What a sad letdown to see the place in such condition!! We thought it would be a well maintained landmark. I don't remember what time of year it was, probably April, but we stopped at Bonneville and saw little more than a sign, an empty garbage can and an old tire . So we got tee shirts and had to leave. We can't make it this year, but maybe next if the time is right. Ron
I go to Speed Week in August. You have to get rooms way in advance or camp in your rig or at tent sites there. Speed Week offers about 300 to 400 cars each year! Bring along a bike or motor cycle to prowl around with. This is not a walking event. You need something to ride to go to the start line from the pit area. It is an event you will not forget! Cars all day on the flats and casinos at night with a rolling car show well into the evening in Wendover. I will have my "Yard Art Rod" there as basic transportation on the flats. I will trailer it there! (check out my album on the build). Speed Week is a very well mangaged event with everything detailed out to perfection. We show up on the Friday morning before everything starts on Saturday for tech-in, then set up our pit and cruise the pit area until they close it and then head for town for night fun! No booze for us as morning comes early and we get in line to run. As a spectator.... you can go everywhere to watch, no limits! This is the only event that has no Pros! Everyone is an amature here. There are many High Dollar teams here but no one wins anything.... just bragging rights to a new record if they get one.
Wow, that sounds like fun! I've heard lots of stories about it and we've had it on our radar screen to attend the gathering for awhile now. We're not drinkers or casino-goers but with that many people around I'm sure there's plenty of other stuff to do. We like to do our "see the USA" vacations in the later summer so it should fit into our plans for a tour thru the west & southwest. I know we can't go this year but we'll pencil it in for 2011. Thanks Ron
Let's stay in contact. We are going to run just two more years and then that's it.... cost too much.... If you go in 2011 we can meet up! It would be nice see a fellow HAMBER and Social Member.
Deal. A lot can happen in that amount of time but we're planning already. We'd do it as part of our vacation to other areas, probably up in your neck of the woods. Our youngest kid lives in the Vancouver BC area so we go out that way several times a year. Don't always drive tho' - it's a trek from Michigan! Ron
