I know, I know, its heresy but hear me out. My wife and I met just before I went to sub school in 1966. I was driving a '65 425 hp Corvette as pictured in first photo at her grandmothers just before we eloped. If you look you'll see Soul and Inspiration on the front fenders. The Righteous Bros being our music of choice back then. Yes it was the 60s and putting a name on your car was in vogue. Well now my question. We had our '40 stripped and painted black this winter. Next year, 2016 is our 50th wedding anniversary. Bear in mind we have had hot rods of all sorts over those years. Now I want to put Soul and Inspiration on the 1940, to close the five decade loop of love with my bride. So if you were going to do it, where on the car would you do it? I am going to have some pinstriping put on the hood and decklid, minimal and want the striper to do the lettering at the same time. Thanks for your help and spare me the brickbats and catcalls.

I'll vote for somewhere only you and your SO will see it.
I will also vote that IMHO the 40 looks best free of any pin striping.

BTW, your Forty is Righteous, Brother.

  6. I like the idea but I also think if not done tastefully it can come off as tacky,,I vote for doing it subtlety and small..like on the dash ,plastering it across the truck or lower fenders would distract from a great looking car. HRP

Im not one to have lettering on a car unless its a race car. Everytime a see a late 80s 90s build with the taz or some bullshit cartoon bafoon on it I want to vomit. I would also be on the bandwagon to put it somewhere you can see it(under the hood, dash, trunk). By the way happy early anniversary!

  8. I like the dash idea as well - it will be a reminder of what you mean to one another every time you drive. If you really want it outside, consider that there is a fair amount of trim and badging on the 40 that lettering may be difficult to fit around and still look good - how about on the lower tail pan? Any ideas on what lettering style you will be looking for? The style will also reflect an era.

I've got to agree 100% with, F&J Blue One and HRP On the dash and I'd say reasonably discretely at that. That car is so drop dead perfect the way it is it would be a sacrilege to put anything on the outside.
If it was a full on tail dragging custom on the rear quarters or down low on the deck lid would be appropriate though.

I'm not a big fan of excess pinstriping or personalization on the outside of any rod or custom preferring the striping to be outline striping following body lines and personalization to be discreet.

Color should match interior. 50-60's style script on lower right trunk. Been there, still doing it!!! Check my profile pics.

I like your 40 as it sets, [gosh I wonder why?] so I agree with the dash. If it were more 50's/60's style then I would vote subtle on deck lid.

Another vote for on the dash. Your 40 looks so great just the way it is.

  13. Lower corner of the deck lid and nothing too gawdy. At least that is how I would do it.

I also like the dashboard location in a letter sized to where it would surprise others to even see it unless they really looked your car over carefully. I'm a big fan of pinstripes too but I limited it to a small dash and under hood locations near my 40 so as to let the car and badging speak for itself. Why not drive it as is for awhile and see if you change your mind.....or not. Beautiful, subtle 40 you have there BTW.

I would put it on the glove box door. That way you won't have to explain it everyone that walks by the car and the two people that know what it means can relive a memory every time they get in the car. Your coupe looks GREAT!

  18. Congratulations on the upcoming anniversary, wounder what people would think if I put "Remember the Alamo",on my dash, which is a private thing between Brenda & myself and has absolutely nothing to do with Santa Anna's siege on the Texas Mission of lore. HRP

Man it's not about what anybody thinks of your car at this point. It's about a celebration of an amazing accomplishment and the memories you've made, and will continue to make In your hot rod. I agree w Ken, match the interior, put it on the trunk in a corner and be proud ! Just make sure you have the right artist do it in the right stlye. Congrats to yall !

Isn't there a place that casts chrome script? That wouldn't look bad on the dash, glove box or corner of the deck lid. I don't think paint, pin stripes or any lettering that isn't cast and chrome looks good on that style of car.

  21. I like on the dash idea. I would be hard pressed to bring myself to put anything on that beautiful fresh paint, which by the way, turned out sooooo nice.

Congratulations on the upcoming anniversary! Love the coupe just like it is.:)
My first choice of where to have the lettering was below the trunk on the lower right panel next to the right fender.
But I agree with the others maybe only on the glove box where you and your bride will see it everytime you ride together.

My 55 Chevy wagon has a little red wagon cartoon on the right tailgate. I hate it but the guy I sold the wagon to had that done. I also love flames but believe a 40 Ford looks right the way Henry had it built.
As far as chrome script I had chrome vinyl SPORT made for my late model truck. Wouldn't recommend that style on a 40 Ford. If it were lettered on the tail I'd have thin script painted on similar to 40's truck lettering.

  24. I am NOT used to seeing your car without it's flames, and every photo I see of it, I think, "Man, I like that '40!"

Count me on for a Dash lettering guy.

One more for the dash/ glove box door. Your lady will see it every time she gets in the car.

  26. You know...my missus dislikes riding in my '40 coupe. I guess I'd have to put mine on the deck lid. LOL

  27. One more vote for the dash, but it's a fantastic reason to put it anywhere you want. Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary.

Real tiny on the chrome strip on the doors. Better yet, on a tag on the front, that way it's easily taken on and off as wanted.

Just under and back a bit from the front of the hood side trim, same font and size and distance from the trim as the "Ford Deluxe" at the rear. Lets the world know in a tastefully discrete way IMO.

I'd get someone to photo shop it from a few different angles to study the exact fore and aft location before I'd risk damaging that nice paint job though.
