I'm looking at options for the '48 Ford. I see these used quite often and they look good with the wide whites. My question is, what years were they offered and what size(s)? I'm running 5.60-15s in front and G78-15s in back. Also, what's the availablity? Are they being reproduced?
I bought a set of the caps back around '96 - they were being repoped by Wheel Vintiques, I believe. Very nice quality, but not inexpensive. (Don't remember the price) Dan
Wheel Vintiques make two different Merc caps. One that fits most all wheels with a 10 1/8" I.D. They also make one's to fit the O.E. Merc wheels which were 10 3/4" (or something like that).
I understand the repops don't fit as well as the stockers. Buddy ok mine had to modify just a little bit for a good fit on stock Merc wheels........OLDBEET
The caps used on Chapouris' roadster were only used in 1950. '49s had lettering on a raised ring around the edge ("MERCURY EIGHT MERCURY EIGHT", I believe), '51s had a Mercury head on a raised boss in the middle. They all fit the same wheels -- Mercury or Lincoln -- but only the '50s are completely plain.
Donnie, The set on my 32 were 50s. Got em from Wheel Vintiques along with the gennie rims. They fit fine on those rims.
Immediately postwar -- '46-'48. I think there were a coupla graphic treatments, but they were all that fat bowl shape.
