I bought a 1940 Ford rear, doing the Tardel Bishop AV8 ride, building it with my 11 year old son. I have a late 40's flathead and 39 transmission. I pulled the rear apart. There is slight pitting on about 10 teeth of the ring gear. It is on the convex side of the gear (hope that makes sense, don't know the correct term). The concave side is fine. The pinion is fine. The bearings look good, but i am planning to replace those, and the races. Should I replace the ring/pinion? Ok to run it as is? Thanks Scott
Slight pitting? Pics would help. On the bearings, if they are nice, do not replace them. Old stuff in good cond is a better bet than new offshore stuff.
Found this. Mine isn't that bad. I looked at the bearings, they have very very slight pitting. Dunno http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=235266&highlight=pitting+gear
It kind of depends on how bad the 'pitting" is. The convex side of the ring gear tooth is the drive side, so it has to be good.
I'd replace the bearings that are pitted. I try to save what i can, but if the bearing feels grainy when you rotate them in their races, you really have no choice.
If it looked like the ones in the pic from the post you should be OK . If you are running a high performance engine then I would think about it maybe . I look at it this way , the worst it can do is break , right ! If you replace the ring gear , you will still have to replace the pinion also so just drive it for a while then take a look at them again and see what has changed if anything at all . I would rub the burrs off and drive it till it stops ! Retro Jim
