I have used EASY OFF oven cleaner to strip anodizing from aluminum. It does work well. I stripped the 2 front fender mouldings on my 69 Fairlane wagon. I then carefully worked the dents out, sanded with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper, then #1000, then #2000 and polished with a small handheld buffer and regular buffing compound. Looked amazing. If you leave them like this, the aluminum will oxidize quickly and look dull again too soon, so I carefully cleaned the mouldings with grease and wax remover and sprayed them with clearcoat. They look as good as new after 2 years.
As a caution, EASY OFF will destroy the aluminum if left on too long. It's nasty stuff, so don't spray it on and walk away. Do it in the garage or outdoors if fumes bother you. ( they do me, I've painted too many years).
