question about rim width

are 16x4 rims wide enough for 700 or 750 back tires i am sure they should work with 520-600 fronts no problem but i was not sure about the back

 

Yes, they are wide enough.

so what is the largest rear tire you could run on that 4" wheel? what about 4 1/4" wheels?

(sixteens in both cases)

Or you could hunt down some 41-42 Lincoln Mercury rims for the rear, they are 5x16 & look identical to 4x16.....right down to the dimple for the cap!
May take a while to find though & pricey too, unless you get lucky.

I've used 7.50's on 4" rims with no trouble too, but currently run 7.00's on the 5" rims which are just as fat but a fraction lower in hieght than the 7.50's.
