The weather strip is has been ate up for a while and the rust has gotten pretty bad in the upper and lower gates on my 56 belair 9 passenger. I'm starting to search for a upper and lower gates and I'm curious if any other makes models or years will interchange. Any help would be appreciated.
Man, when I was a kid growing up in Tulsa, there was a guy who had a red and white 9 passenger 56. According to Hollanders, 55-57 Chevy and 55-57 Pontiac wagons, except Nomads and Safaris Bring your 56 to the Stray Kat 500 in Dewey OK in May. Cool ride.
I've bought both on egay in the last 2 yrs. Liftgate was complete with window, garnish, stainless trim, and very minor surface rust, $25 + shipping. Same with tailgate, super cherry and everything but the hinges $85. There out there, just gotta be patient. I passed on plenty of suspect tailgates in the $400 range and saw bare liftgate frames over $100. I haven't really paid attention for probably a year now. Also scored a NOS tailgate skin for a 63 Belair for$200 about 10 yrs. ago and a good solid complete 63 wagon tailgate complete for $150 within the last couple of years. They're much harder to find because a one year only and tendency of the drains to plug up and hold moisture. You might not match these prices, but I never thought I'd get em that cheap either. Good luck on your search.
thanks for the info and encouragement guys. I saw a liftgate on ebay a few weeks ago but didn't pull the trigger, haven't seen anything since. arkie...I know where there's a 56 pontiac so that may be the ticket but I need to go talk to the guy and take a look at it. I got this wagon from roothawg a couple years ago...he's down in mustang ok...so who knows...could be the same one. I've been wanting to get down to Dewey for the longest time but never seem to make it. Dad's been down several times but I have yet to. Gotta wait and see how things pan out this year. Thanks again guys!
Rocky! If you can, check on the rearend in that 56 Pontiac. Mine is out on my 56 860 2 door wagon. Need to find something before spring. Just need the center section. Thanks Ed
