  2. Take note of where the adjuster screw slot is.

Loosen the locknut and remove it.

Unscrew the adjuster screw downward until the aluminum lid comes off.

GM used a grease in these and it's no longer available through GM.

A very acceptable substitute is Sta-Lube's Extreme Pressure Grease with Molybdenum.

It's a good idea to clean the box and then use an iced tea spoon to spoon fresh grease in.

Reverse the disassembly procedure and if necessary adjust it for play.

There was a good article, or post on here or something in the last couple of years about Vega boxes and sealing them, also told how to fill them. Best done with the box off the car, remove the big ring nut on the bottom, clean it and the box really good, run a bead of silicone and put the big ring nut back on. Let it sit overnight. Now to answer your question one of the bolts that hold the adjuster plate on top goes all the way thru to the inside of the box. Mark the flat on the bolt that is down, remove the bolt, drilled a small hole thru the flat that you marked to the center of the bolt, then drill from the bottom of the bolt up to the cross drilled hole. You now have a vent for the steering box and a box that won't leak. I use an eyedropper to fill the box with 90w gear oil and put my newly drilled vent bolt back in, has worked good for me on several Vega boxes over the years. i apologize for my lack of correct terminology but hope this helps.

Another good lube for grease filled or leaky ones that use 90W is a semi-fluid grease. It's called "picker head" grease most farm supplies should have it or visit a John Deere dealer. It's
