question for brake system gurus

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hubnut, Jul 18, 2007.

  1. Im wanting to put a dual resevoir master cyl and power booster on my 58 Mercury, keeping the stock drum brakes. I have a power booster and master cyl I pulled from a 78 cougar that I parted out. What would I need to make that setup work? I was hoping it mite be as simple as buying a couple of those drum brake inline proportioning valves and let it bump, but I know there gonna be more to it. I never get that lucky.

  2. Bumping this back up for the after work crew.

There might be a way but the best thing to do would be to get a dual M/C from a four wheel drum car. Dual masters became mandatory about '65-'66 or so if memory serves. Most domestic cars still retained, at least as standard equipment, four wheel drums for awhile past that point. Depending on the particular model, w/ or w/o power assist is a possibility and either could have been available. In recent years I owned both a '70 Dart and a '70 Cuda that both came originally w/ drums all around. Both of course though had dual M/Cs. The Cuda's was power assist and the Dart's was manual. Although front discs were optional on the Cuda, mine didn't originally have them, although I did install them. I'm not sure if they were optional on the Dart yet by then or not.

i'd look at a master cyl for a 68/9/70 fullsize ford with drum brakes. if the push rod [sticking out of the power booster] length's the same and it'll bolt up i'd put it on, run the extra line to the dist block.

the depth of the hole in the m/c plunger will give you a good reference as to the rod length.
