Not so long ago, I found (and misplaced the link to) a fotki or whatever online picture album that contained scanned pictures from the '60s magazine coverage of the Revell-Pactra model car contests. Anybody know what I'm referring to or maybe have the link? thanx in advance for any help!
There is pending book about the contest. See http://www.themodelcarmuseum.org/information/Publications/Contest_Book/contest_book.html
Yep, familiar with the talk about a book on the subject; thanx! Still looking for the online album of pictures from the magazine coverage way back then.
What a thrill that must have been, Tom, for a young man of 19. Very, very cool memories. Nice accomplishment.....Don.
I had that magazine ! I was all of 7 yrs. old, and just started building models. Still building them today!
I took it all in stride, but the wildest part was that they hired a helicopter service to shuttle us from LAX to Disneyland where we stayed. And that was right after getting out of my first airliner. If you're old enough, you'll remember how rare air travel was in those days.
When you think of it, Revell spent a lot of money to have these guys brought to California and then lodge them as well. BTW, The show GEARZ on the Speed Channel is starting a national model contest with Revell.
I really like the notion of that new pub and I sure hope they use some of the old pix in it as I had a couple of winners. My first one was pretty much a turd, but it was polished up with gold flake and won a trophy at the hobby shop. My second attempt was nicer, won a regional award for paint and detailing (IL / IN) and that included a 4ft trophy and a Yamaha trail bike! My stuff certainly wasn't as nice as Tom's but I did get pix of my models and zit face in a few model car mags. If you haven't been to one, the new model car contests like the NNLs have models that are WAY off the Ricter scale compared to those first attempts. FYI, there is a guy out there who offers a CD of all the old Model Car Science mags, but I don't know the link. Later, Gary
I found 1 of the links I was looking for! http://public.fotki.com/rwildeone/auto-reference/mags/misc/car-model-revellpac/
Here is the Revell's 2nd National Open model car Contest from July 1964 add. Judges Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Tommy Ivo, Tony Nancy, Dean Moon, and Carroll My FIRST (local hobby shop) Place Trophy. I still have the Trophy and the Model car, a Candy Apple 1940 ford with opening doors ,working headlights and radio. I also won 2nd and 3rd place and Best paint.
Well here are four pictures i took back then. AMT 1940 ford, open doors and trunk, red and white velvet int with swivel bucket seats, AMT 1957 chevy custom tail lights .frenched headlights, wired engine, 8 coats of AMT Candy Apple Red over gold. Sorry but cameras (Brownie Hawkeye 620 ) were not very good for close ups back then. I'll find the car and get new pictures of it. I know i started to remove the paint that had cracked after many years. John
kinda cool seeing dean moon and roth messing with model cars...i guess we all love model cars no matter what age. very cool pics.
If anyone has any info, photos, or articles on the 1965 Revell-Testors National contest, I'd love to see it. I took a regional first place but the model was destroyed in the return shipment. I gave all my model stuff away years later (doh!) and would like to see what got published. Maybe there are some records at Revell? Thanks
