The tail housing bush on my 1956 F100 has the lube hole at the top. I have just pressed it out to put it in the right way but there is no hole to line it up to ? Which way up should it be or does it make no difference ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

If there's no hole, how could it make a difference?

Also, are we talking about a manual transmission, or automatic? And do you have a picture of the bushing? I've seen the bushing for an automatic, with a hole, used in a manual transmission.

It wouldn't be unusual for a service bushing to have a hole in it to be used for both applications, that did or didn't require the hole.

It is the Fordomatic transmission. There are two holes horizontally top and bottom to the seal area at the rear so I guess the hole in the bush has a purpose to lube the yoke ?

Probably the same bushing as a C4 that has been replaced in the past. Original bushing may not have had a hole.

That's what I was thinking, the bushing is the same size, and the later bushing with a hole is the replacement for the original. The hole is not needed in your application.

Could get trick and put a groove in the bottom of that housing and make it lube better. Line that hole up to it.

Thanks for the replies. I will put the hole to the bottom just in case.
