i have a chevy AD truck that belonged to my grandfather. i watched him pay for it, and watched previous owner sign the ***le when I was about 10. the truck was used on the farm and never transferred or registered. I have the ***le signed by the original owner, but it was issued in 59 in wisconsin and the original owner has been dead for 10yrs or so. Anyways according to the state this would be an abandoned vehicle yes? from what I understand you can't bond for ***le on an abandoned vehicle. so my question is what do I need to tell the state. my dad has it by default and would give me a bill of sale. i know that some of you will say to just transfer the third party ***le, but if I can do this without defrauding the state I would prefer it. ultimately i'm wanting to know what reason you would bond for ***le, aside from the states recent pre-48 racket, for a vehicle that wouldn't meet the states definition of an abandoned vehicle. Also what was the approximate cost for the bonded ***le after fees appraisals etc Thanks
Why do you want to do it in Illinois? You have your location as wisconsin and the ***le is from wisconson. Are you going to move or can you get it changed over in wisconsin?
i just posted a half page reply and erased it on accident. So here it goes. the bond is used in case someone comes to claim the truck, they would get the bond and you would get the truck. It's very simple to do, I just did it for my 32 coupe all you have to do is be nice to them and wait. As far as cost, bonds are usually $20/$1000 of the appraised value. the appraisal has to be done by a licensed appraiser. Mine cost $175. the plates and ***le are going to be $194. So $175 plus $194 is $369 plus your bond. Plus the taxes paid on the purchase price of the vehicle. Your situatiuon is unique and you need to call Debbie downstate and find out what to do. it's the best way to do it, it's easy and you won't have to worry about getting caught with fraudulent paperwork or plates. Just some legwork and wait time. I sent in my papers and received my plates about 14 weeks later. Don't hound the S.O.S. office either, or you'll send yourself to the bottom of the pack.
just went thru with this 5 window is right the bond is for the states protection if you have all the info and the ***le call 217~782~9796 this is the bond ***le dept. for the sec. of state ask them which way they would like you to go and hang in there it will take some time i do not know what the work load is but it will not be over night if you piss them off you go to the bottom of the stack good luck
If you havent changed "all" of your info, go back to WI and ***le it. Illinois' ***ling procedures would be a good enough reason for me to move OUT of that state.
If the truck is original and your dad has the ***le with numbers that match the truck, he inhareted the truck and should be able to use a power of attorney to sell you the truck. Bonded ***les are for vehicles that do not have the paperwork, or modified vehicles that do not have original equipment, as I understand it. But call the state number and ask. Then you know. Gene
This is not an abandoned truck, it has papers in your family name it can sit in your garage forever and is still not abandoned. Abandoned is officially when the county tow truck picks it up. This truck is an inheritance, you may need to see someone about how to legally transfer it to you. 5 Window, I got bad news for you, that is not how a bond works. They make a claim, they get the money and then you owe the bond company the money "and they just take it cause you sign over the power for them to in order to obtain the bond" and you may get to keep the vehicle if you can. Just like bail bonds, it skips and they come get you. You may be able to call services in Springfield.
Ummm, maybe you guys did not read and understand your bond statement. A bond is not an insurance policy, it only protects the state and not you. That is why you had to give all the personal info, if it defaults you are on the hook for the amount paid out.
if you have a signed ***le in hand ,just get your dad to write a letter stating that he stored the truck on his property as an investment.get a power of attorney letter stating you were given the truck as a gift, for tax puposes.then go to the s.o.s.office in your area and they will walk you through or do the paperwork for you.i just did it for a caddy that was signed over in 73 and the woman there basically said if you have a signed ***le thats all you will need.beware the il.irs will contact you months down the road estimating the value of the vehicle and you might have to pay sales tax according to what they say the cars blue book value is/ thats why you need the letter stating it was a gift.just dont be too talkative, answer only when asked, never volunteer info.this state is broke and they are really getting crazy with fees and taxes.
thanks guys for the response. My grandpa never transferred the ***le to his name he just used it to run between two farms that were ****ed aqainst each other. I just don't want to say the wrong thing and have them tell me they'll never ***le it, i hear they can be really ****. I guess I should just call them and be honest and hope for the best. Also wondering when in the process they allow you register the vehicle. do you have to wait the months for the process to complete or does the bond act as a temporary ***le. I guess I'm asking if I want to be able to be on the road this summer am I dreaming
the process ****s, be patient, have money because its not cheap, estimate about 1k-1.5k for the whole process
You have a ***le, hopefully the guy who sold it to your grandfather signed it, this was a long time ago I ***ume, most likely the guy is gone. You need a Bill of Sale with a price and an amount on it from a guy you can't find who is most likely deceased. You hopefully have a set of numbers that jive to the numbers on the ***le. I think I know what I would do if I needed a signed ***le from a dead man, maybe very similar to what I did when I went to a ball game instead of school and needed a note from mom. Sorry Mom, they did win though. Sure seems minor considering you can go through here and see self made numbers.
is there any truth to the fact that if you get a bonded ***le in illinois you have to keep the car for 3 years tk
You are required to hold it for the duration of the period that a claim may be posted against it, 3 years from issue date of new ***le and vin paper work, not the bond issue date.
right exactly which is why I am wondering what reasons people have bonded for ***le because it would be a hell of a lot easier to get a bill of sale and affidavit from a live man, my father
That won't always fly. I got a call last week asking me if the seller that signed my ***le sold the car to me in 1924. I had to say "no" since I was born in 71. No matter, I had a clean ***le signed and legit - I have to pay and wait. And this was no less than 7 months after I payed to transfer ***le, takes the wind right out of your sails.
No as soon as you have the ***le in hand you can do whatever you want ,they will keep the bond for 3 years
just an update. my dad called me a girl, took the ***le and transferred it. I'm all good and a happy guy. i'll do an introduction soon and show you guys what i'm workin with
Went through this last year on my '39 1/2 Ton that I bought WITH a clean signed signed MI ***le and a Bill of Sale. My embarr***ing State said that since the vehicle was Pre 1946 I would have to have it bonded and appraised before a ***le could be issued. This wonderful state said they will no longer issue ***les to vehicles unless they a street worthy! My truck is about 4 years and $15,000 from being street worthy. Yes, it was a pain in the *** but I got it done finally. If your attorney can't get it straightened out, get a GOOD Illinois approved appraiser. Bottom line? About $500 and 6 months later I've got a clean Illinois ***le in my name with the correct frame numbers. Contact me off digest for further questions.
