Could someone take a quick width measurement for me please? Just from side to side. I have one but it's buried in the shed and there's no way i can get to it and need that number.. Thanks. Tony
The widest part of the seat I have measures 40 1/4" at the widest point. Which is at the front of the seat. Got it out of an early 80's Caravan. It is sitting in my 30 Model A coupe. Only about 1/4 to a 1/2" to spare on each side. It is a fairly comfortable seat. Just not sure yet if I want to use it or try to find something a little bit narrower.
42" at the front of the lower cushion. Widest point. Mid-90's two passenger seat. Later models look to be similar, but I haven't measured the one I have yet. The mid-90's seat seem to be the cushiest - as in most comfortable. A couple pics for your perusal.
Here is a pic of a Chrysler middle seat in my 35 Ford PU. Mine measuers 46 inches at the front which is the widest point. My doors close just fine, but the seat touches each side. Id look for the 4 inch narrower one if you can find it.
This seems like a good place to mention, some of the GM minivans have narrow individual seats in the back that come right out.. look like they'd be easy to make a bracket for, or modify as needed. They have three individual seats across the middle. Low backed with a kind of round top, enough you might be able to disguise one as a more traditional looking seat with the right cover. I didn't measure them, but they looked skinny enough to fit two in an A and leave a little room between. The one I looked at was an Olds Sillouette, like a 95, but I'm sure the other vans like it - Pontiac TransSport, Chevy Lumina APV - have the same seats in them. The ones that look like a dustbuster vaccuum mutated by radiation to giant size.
On Monday I picked up a two person seat for the back and two of the Lumina buckets for the front of my A sedan. The bucket are about 18" wide. I have them sitting in the front and with plenty of room on the side I have about 3" between them. I will have to modify the mounting bracket but the good thing is the backs fold over like the stock seats.
