Hey - I was wondering where you guys source a lot of your model parts, mostly from other kits? Specifically, where do you get the mini mexican blankets? Thanks! TinyE
You can also print a photo of a blanket onto some decal paper and use that, but the tape-and-thread method is tried and true. Most of my model parts come from other kits, usually in the spare parts graveyard of failed and abandoned projects over the years. There are many aftermarket vendors on the net too. Some of my favourites are; www.garagecast.com www.edeuce.com www.modelcargarage.com www.rndunique.com www.perrysresin.com (Canadian site) www.modelhaus.com
Most of my stuff comes from the parts box. I'll buy one kit for it's wheels alone, and I'm left with all the leftovers. I've gotten to a point where I've built cars using parts only from that bin...mostly hot rod stuff. I've only done one mexican blanket interior. Sort of a combination of the above methods. I printed the blanket from a picture on the computer, then used double stick tape to put it on the seat. I'd think a decal would work, but youd need to spray it with a clear dull coat to get the right look. I'm too impatient for the thread method, but it does turn out very nice and realistic results.
This kit has one. http://www.revell-monogram.com/stor...0&ScaleId=0&TypeId=0&StartRow=65&FromSearch=1 I also bought one at a local hobby shop.
Can anyone recommend a good decal setting solution? Working on a kit from Christmas and the decals don't give at all. They are acting like solid sheet plastic.
I feel you man. I have built over 40 something models and ended up having to make about 1/3 of my parts and others i lucked up and found in other kits. Look at the revell-monogram website to get replacement parts and whatever else you need otherwise use some thread and tape or a real small paint brush and a steady hand.
"Can anyone recommend a good decal setting solution?" When I built mey models, I didn't have to use a setting solution. Just used hot soapy water, that just about always puts them into submission. However, With frail or large decals, I recomend using a piece of strong paper (buisness cards, etc...) to support the decals while you slide them onto the model surface. HINT: wet both surfaces when applying decals to ease application.
I just cannabalize other kits, but i have a friend who is really into it and he gets a magazine, I've noticed in his magazines, advertisments for special parts, i would go to your newsstand and pick one up!
Theres companies that make aftermarket parts for model kits. I would check there. I used to build models and i bought some stuff from companies like that ( i think i got a blower, flocking, speaker grates, and a steering wheel for a '32 i built). If you look around on the internet you can find em or check out the magazines. also www.briansmodelcars.com used to be a really good site with tons of info so you might want to check there.
i kit bah most of the stuff i build, anyone can buy parts but it takes a real modeler to build and bash his own. check out this seat cover http://public.fotki.com/Keith__Shan...ord_trucks/37_ford_truck/wild_37_truck29.html my wife crochet it for me made this blanket after seeing ken hamiltons http://public.fotki.com/Keith__Shan...31_ford_minicraft/its_finished_31_ford_5.html another pic of the blanket check out those seats http://public.fotki.com/Keith__Shan...1_ford_minicraft/its_finished_31_ford_12.html ok heres a tip for you. how to make a shifter out of a pop rivet http://public.fotki.com/Keith__Shannan/keiths_model_car/model_car_pictures-1/how_to_make_a_shifter/ enjoy keith
........I've known Ken Hamilton for years. There are a few other builders out there that MAY be a little more skilled, but NONE more creative, humorous or willing to help. This guy is a piece of work! Another neat little tip? For a dome light, go to the craft store and find those little eyes that have a black bead in them ("rolling eyes"), gently peel the edge of the backing off and remove the little black bead. You can put a tiny drop of Super Glue inside and it will frost it. .........I take that back........Ken is the top of the "heap!"
.........I take that back........Ken is the top of the "heap!" [/QUOTE] i've never met him but i've email chatted once with him and you get a positive vibe and want to build!!! I saw one of his models in person and it was amazing!!!! kens model pic taken by me http://public.fotki.com/Keith__Shan..._shows/mid_atlantic_nnl-1/model_show2_21.html the clunkers i took to the show 36.5 ranchero http://public.fotki.com/Keith__Shan..._shows/mid_atlantic_nnl-1/model_show2_26.html and a gasser http://public.fotki.com/Keith__Shan..._shows/mid_atlantic_nnl-1/model_show3_16.html keith
I got a "rat rod" model A pick up model for christmas and it had decals of blankets for the seats. I used the flat head out of a 50 merc model , that was about the only "upgrade" the little A got.
Man I did not need to see this post. As if I did not have enough going on with my full size truck I found a company that makes a resin kit for it. Coming soon..a mini slick in 1/24 scale. May give me something to work on when it's raining out. The thing I love about model cars is that I can have all the cars that I can't afford.....
Most parts I use are either extra parts or old wrecked pieces of crap that I built years ago. I think the coolest ones to build though are vintage rods using parts only, and not actually starting with a base kit. -Dean
