I purchased a new gasket (Vintique #B-700616), and it is so thick it makes my cowl vent look bad sitting above my cowl so much. Does anyone know of an alternative that is thinner? I tried to cut this one down with a razor blade but it just got worse as my cut wasn't straight.
    I appreciate any good/helpful suggestions.

I hit the hardware store for weatherstripping that is the width and thickness I need. I have never been able to get an original style gasket to do anything other than what you are experiencing. I kind of thought it was just me...

No one makes a cowl vent gasket the correct thickness. I used an end mill to machine a groove in a piece of aluminum to the correct thickness or depth. Use that to support a few inches of the gasket. Then I used a razor blade to remove the excess material.

Can you sand the gasket thinner on a belt sander? Or use a hand grinder?

I reduced the thickness on mine with a hand held sander the type that takes a sheet of paper and clamps the ends.

Hey guys, thank you for all the responses, I really appreciate it. I'm thinking I will trying sanding process with my next Vintique seal since several of you have done this with success. I tried cutting it down with a razor knife and went too far in a couple of spots and ruined it. I'll give it a shot (and take my time) Thanks again!!

Why would you buy (and modify) another Vintiques piece when the one from Bob Drake seems to fit?

It looks like he has them in stock.

I guess people keep buying the inferior vintique seals and end up throwing them in file 13 so vintique keep making inferior seals. They don’t care if they fit or not.

They retooled so they could make a gasket that didn't fit? Or maybe they are reselling Vintique?

You are right Tubman. I called Bob Drake and verified they make their own and are not as thick. I'm going to order one of theirs as soon as I put a bigger order together. Thank you!!
