Before I mess up and do something wrong, can anyone tell me how the arms are supposed to attach to the windshield frame brackets? My issue here is all the parts are new but don't fit together. The brackets on the frame have 3/8" studs on them and the holes in the arms are 5/16". I purchased new studs (stud and screw), that I believe are supposed to hold the arms to the brackets but they are also 5/16". What would be the right fix? Do I drill out the hole in the arms to 3/8" and use the studs that are already part of the bracket mounted on the windshield frame, or drill out the threaded hole in the bracket to 5/16" to fit the new threaded studs I purchased? Does anyone know what the hole size in the slide arm is supposed to be? Any help is appreciated. Thank you! (see attached picture)
Thanks guys! As far as the knob, it's on the "A" pillar end and that end is fine, it's just where it attaches to the frame where my concern is. I appreciate knowing from "nochop" that the holes in your arms are 3/8". My arms are short because my top "is" chopped 4". So far it's looking like I need to just drill out my arms to 3/8" and forget about using the studs I purchased. I'll hold off a bit in case I get further feedback. Thanks again!
Here are some photos that may or may not be helpful ! I am going through this at the moment and also not finding it that easy to figure out. I also started another thread last week about identifying the different arms in the last photo. If anyone knows, I would be interested to hear what they are.
Thank you "clem" for your response. Pictures are always helpful. It's obvious to me my parts are just not all from the same supplier and therefore don't match exactly. At least I know how things go together. I do not know enough about the various year models "arms" to help identify yours in the picture. My guess would be the top one is from a 32 and the others from an earlier model. Thanks again!
I had this curved ball with my all supplied by Brookville body, screen etc. The mounts did not match up so the screen wouldn't close. The easiest fix for me with paint and chrome done was to remake the screen bracket. I did it in steel first which was only tacked and took 3 attempts to get the positions right. Then made in stainless and polished. Bit of a head scratcher but I got there! Chris
Clem, I once had some curved arms like your last two in the photo and they supposedly came off of a Dodge.
thanks, not earlier ford, as the model A were straight. thanks. Not many Dodges around here but there were some, so very possible that the guy found some in a wrecked or dumped car. They came with my coupe, but won’t work.
@cmusser Note how the arms in the blue car (photo’s that I posted) go up, and the arms in @Happydaze photos go down. I have seen them done both ways, originally they went up, although it doesn’t seem to matter which way you choose, (just what ever works best for you ?). To answer your original question, I believe that the threaded stud is different both ends, hence different hole sizes ?
The location of the fixed stud (with big knob) on the A pillar makes a difference. Blue photo is low. Chris's is much higher. It appears all '32 closed cars use the same slide arms. Finally, the top height, stock or chopped makes a difference. This isn't much, but it's all I have to contribute.
Long slide arm for stock roof height https://www.roadstersupply.com/1932-Stock-Slide-Arms-Chrome-p/vin-b-45463-s.htm Short slide arm for chopped top https://www.roadstersupply.com/1932-Chopped-Slide-Arms-Stainless-p/vin-b-45463-ss-chp.htm
This is what my fordor (windscreen) 5/16” coarse thread stud looks like. I assume that it is original.
