Thirty years ago when I had a '66 panel truck like that, these were hundred dollar vehicles. Hard to grasp the value today.
Glad you found one. What stops the truck, the brakes or the tires? Trick question, both, actually. Check'em all!

Is that the PCV valve connected to the air cleaner? Normally the PCV is connected to engine vacuum on one valve cover and the vent is connected to the air cleaner on the opposite cover. Maybe they just used a PCV to connect the vent line to the cover and the actual PCV is in the other cover.

Thanks for that catch, so the pcv is indeed going to the air cleaner. The p***enger side has a breather on the valve cover (no ****** on that type of breather). The distributor doesn't have a vac advance. The hose going left in the photo has a plug on the end. The trans vac line is running off the intake directly. The booster is running off a fitting on the rear of the carb.

I can't really find any diagrams or info on those rochester carbs that show where to connect pcv lines, etc. The hose running left with the plug is probably coming off the pcv port.

  5. You certainly don't look very hard or use the wrong term in your search.
You might want to break down and get a manual for this little pittle stuff.
If that hei dizzy running the show without vacuum it might be masking another problem. Picture the previous guy saying - "I don't know but it runs better without the vacuum advance."

  6. The value of the dollar sunk, that's still a 500 truck in 1986 dollars.

  7. Not a guess, standard issue Chevy cast iron intake and run of the mill 2bbl Rochester carb. Several million produced. Super easy to rebuild, nothing exotic.
You can get the casting numbers off the manifold, some (not all) 2bbl castings have a tiny bit ($50.00ish) of value to certain circle track racers. Get the numbers off the carb and it can be deciphered as well because there were certain variances across years. That would be helpful to you when it needs serviced.

Thank you for the diagram. I didn't even see evidence of a vacuum canister/bracket on that distributor. Is it possible someone removed it and just put the HEI distributor with the cap? Or is it maybe just an HEI cap on it?

The HEI cap only fits the HEI style Dizzy, The points style distributor is smaller.
Someone might have removed the vacuum advance.
Distributors are so inexpensive nowadays that you are better off replacing with a new one. Summit sells their brand of HEI with upgraded components for less than $100 bucks, it is still a Chinese dizzy but better than the ****ty Chinese pro-comps.
You probably will notice night and day difference in performance once you fix that distributor.

Thanks that's super good to know. So I replaced the HEI on the SBC 350 in my 53' Chevy with a Streetfire one and kept the old one. Nothing was wrong with the old one I just wanted a newer looking cap, etc. I'm glad I kept the old one and will use it for the truck.

  11. Most Marine and some racing distributors don't have a vac advance.
I'm not real familiar with them but The marine hei ignition module is said to create its own advance within the solid state unit. The racing distributor is just that, designed to work well and hold the timing at WOT without any interference from the canister or vacuum input.

Thanks, I'm going to take the cap off and see if it's obvious that the vacuum advance was removed. One thing's for sure, this truck has been to TJ and has been worked on there! Luckily its mostly a stock truck with just the engine/trans and brake booster mod.

I think it's possibly a distributor from a fuel injected vehicle. My OT 86 Tuned Port Vette doesn't have a vacuum advance, the advance is controlled by the ECM. The distributor looks almost identical to the one I have in a 75 350, however the module has I think one more plug going to it. If yours is like that, the spare you have would be your best bet to change it out with.

Let us know when your truck starts beeping:p

  15. BTW, one of the reasons it had a funky bend on the fuel line is that carb is off of another GM car. Most Chevys had the fuel inlet coming out of the side and the PCV ****** under the float bowl (at least the early 70s). Can you post a better shot of the motor with the air cleaner off and straight down so we can see the whole motor/ engine bay.

  16. PCV to the large port on the front of the carb, Brake booster to the rear large screw in fitting on the rear of the carb, trans to intake manifold between dist and carb, and vacuum advance to small port on front of carb. The line to the air cleaner would have come from the breather on the valve cover (if it has a port)

Haha it makes other annoying noises but I don't care so much if this truck makes them... the 53 Chevy gets more attention and rather that beep not be heard when people watch the car slowing down.

Crazy... i came across a sweet truck in Los Angeles I may get. I would keep my chopped 53 for the occasional weekend cruise, the green c10 truck for beating up and driving on fiesta island's sand and this one to replace my daily driver which is a 2007 Prius (I'm embarr***ed to say that). My work to commute will decrease significantly and ill have 12 mi daily mon-friday (every other friday off) and no highway driving.

This truck has a 350/and TH350 auto trans... anyone think im crazy to make it my daily driver? Supposedly its in good shape mechanically. I'll have to get good at working on the 350/350 combo as my 53' chevy has that and so does the C-10 i bought friday. The only thing is the rear looks lowered too much. Has a "dropped axle - rear end changed from bottom to top, air shocks in the rear".

Even with the awkward visor and digital gauges, it's worlds better than a Pr**s! Somehow, it seemed there was something you weren't telling us. Sell the econobox at once. You'll feel better right away.
Chicks will respect you more, too.

Having fun with the truck! I bought a dingy with outboard motor to cruise mission bay.

I'm really glad I got the truck and am having a lot of fun with the roomie and dog.

Haha yea that's true! Maybe I can make my c10 a daily driver eventually too.

  24. DO IT.......you have enough cars now if something breaks you'll have backups. Be warned you'll need to get better at fixing them, they will act up at the worst possible times (and most likely at the same time) and there will come a time where you'll have to choose either time with the girl or fixing the cars (remember she'll always cool off but your cars will still be broken).

After I said all that, I wouldn't change it for the world. It's a totally different perspective on life that just feels right.

  25. Also on the '56?, the things I would change are the digital dash, the electric fan, the air cleaner and get the wires away from the headers.......but that's just me (less electronics the less to break).

Thanks I probably should I have the cash. I totally know I'll be doing a lot more car work all the time when least desired. The girl loves that I work on my 53 Chevy and sits in the garage when I'm working on it.

That truck is cool, that boat is awesome. I've read all your threads and posts. Look man, you aren't a spring chicken, stop F-ing around and ask that girl to marry you. Life starts moving real fast soon, kid, and the chances of snagging another gem get slimmer with every back ache. Trust me on that. I met my wife when I was 35, She urged me to throw away money we didn't have on my dream car. Boom, that was it, she had a marriage proposal within a month (less than a year after we met). Best decision I ever made. Go for it, brother.

What is the HP of the outboard? If it's the smaller 2.5 it can be easily modified to put out 3.5 (I have the 3.3 version) Mercury,Mariner,Nissan, Tohatsu ,all made by Tohatsu)
