Question On HEMI & SBC

The qustion is that use can use a sbc water pump on a Chrysler HEMI 331-392 now is this true? This would help me out alot thanks.

Wish I could swimeasy but this block has been redone for speed not stock was bought at a speed shop.

 

I wouldn't call water pump adapters advanced stuff..... since a rebuilt 392 pump is going to cost you over $100 anyway and the availability isn't going to get any better.... now if someone built an adapter to use the B/RB Mopar (4 bolt) water pump in the 392 (5 bolt) casting that would be even better.... IMHO

 

Rebuilding a 392 pump can be done on the cheap with a little swap meet luck and access to a lathe. I've rebuilt a few that way - "robbing" the guts out of some other early Mopar pump and then facing off the seal surface on the housing. FWIW the SBC pump is too narrow to easily adapt to the 331-392 series motor - but I did see 'em adapted to the "baby" hemis.

Bigmike - I saw a guy selling a flat adapter on Ebay once to run the 440 style pump on a 392 (4 bolt to 5 bolt adapter). I always wondered how it worked.

 

Yeah I would think it would only take a plate, the wet deck depth is the same. I was thinking of making one myself when my pump kicked on me, and then I scored a rebuilt one at a swap meet.

If you use the long BBC pump, it'll fit with the OEM timing cover (at least it does on the '55 331)

 

yes you can use bbc waterpumps adapters on most hemis, search the web, they exist and work, i want to say hot heads has em but don't quote been a long time....

 

the earlier hemis 51 to early54 331 i believe you can still get the aluminum timing cover with the adapters on it for a smallblock chevy pump,but wont work on 55 up call bob and see availability .

 

I'm using a sbc pump on mine. The top bolt holes line up. Made my own adapters and didn't have to modify the front cover.

Here's an old pic before the blower. The water pump is a B&M. I used a stud on the top hole into the block. The bottom has an allen head cap screw countersunk into the adapter attached to the block and has a stud in the adapter for the pump.

Good looking set up, simple and it works. Sometimes all it takes is a little modification to put the right parts together and solve the problem and make maintenance and parts availability a whole bunch easier.

 

Kerry, Thanks for posting that - I learned something today!!! Kinda neater having at least one bolt per side being a "thru" bolt. I really like it.
