When you register a kit car how do you register it would it be done as the vehicle it is built on or what it has become? Just wondering.
Go to the Secretary of State website, and the step-by-step instructions are posted there. one of the steps is to get the vehicle inspected by your local law enforcement agency; it really helps if you go in there well in advance of the inspection and ask them what they look for during an inspection. If the LEO is a ****head about it - find another precinct or municipality to get it inspected in. Chances are if you take the time to tell them in advance whatcha doin - they'll give you advice on how to p*** the safety inspection. There's also a vin check they hafta do; the Sec of State even has a .pdf file for the form the LEO has to sign. Fill it out in advance; make it easy on them and they're usually easy on you. Finally - be happy you don't live in NJ.
I agree with Chuck. Also, after the Secretary of State bit, I think they send your paperwork off to Lansing for a while and they brew up a ***le. There's a step where some state worker adds a little sticker to your car that sort of acts as the VIN. My dad and I built a Cobra kit. He did most of the registration part. I know we were supposed to have a wiper, all the normal lights, and there might have been some stuff about seatbelts and functioning brakes etc. I don't believe the inspection was too thorough though.
