I am considering getting a '6 Buick 364 with a '65 Turbo 400. My question is; what if any modifications need to be made to the X member? Thanks.
The '60 Buick 364 will have the Dynaflow bolt pattern on it which won't directly mate up to the '65 trans, correct? If you have to put in an adapter to make it work anyway, you might consider using a 200 4r or one of the other smaller overdrive transmissions, will give you more clearance so you won't have to cut your crossmember up so much like you will to put that gigantic '65 unit in. That's about the only input I have.
I have a 425 in my '35 PU (same as '36 frame/firewall). The firewall needed to be cut back (*****in sections) and the X-member completely redone for the ST400 trans. You will need to re-route the steering also.....starter on the driver side. With all that extra weight on the front end you might consider power steering....I have a Saginaw PS box that works well....need to make a place for the pump. Headers will be tough to find......self made tubes work well. I have split wish bones also. You will need to check the oil pan for clearance......and get the correct fitting version. You might think about a remote trans cooler to leave as much cooling as possible for the engine........get a good radiator. I run mine with the hood closed......sometimes a problem in heavy traffic and 95 degree weather.
Nope, the bell housing pattern is the same from 57-66. Nothing Dynaflow specific about it. Now the crank is where there is a difference but a simple bushing takes care of that. You have to enlarge the hole in the center of the flex plate to fit it on the Dynaflow crank, but the bolt pattern is the same. Using an adapter with a smaller transmission doesn't really help as it adds a couple inches length to it. The 65 SP/ST400 are basically TH400's with a Nailhead pattern so it's not that bad to do.
Nice engine. I am working on a 58, 364 naihead as we speak. The plan for now is to be dropping it into a 1941 Ford ch***is.
working on putting a 425 in a '40 ford. you need a rear sump pan (very expensive) and the pickup. ch***is engineering has front mounts. get one of the mini starters. plan on using stock manifolds. firewall already cut from a proir installtion. the best part i am using a tremec tk600. you can get all the parts from mike forte in m***.
Rear sump pans are easy and not really expensive, just get one off of a 364. I've seen more than a couple in yards for the taking. And all you need for the manual setup is available from Bendsten's First post and jumping right in, maybe try doing your intro...
